About

Deep Blue Divers is the in-house dive centre at Six Senses Laamu, a PADI 5-Star operation on the resort island of Olhuveli and the only resort-based diving in the whole of Laamu Atoll. Diving here runs on two tracks: a strong house reef that supports no-boat-needed night dives, and up to three boat trips a day out to the atoll's channels, from an early two-tank run at 8:30am to relaxed one-tank trips later on, plus optional full-day two-channel expeditions and night or blackwater dives. The signature site is Hithadhoo Corner, a resident manta-cleaning station where the resort's Maldives Underwater Initiative runs a Manta Trust research programme; guests get a pre-dive briefing from an actual researcher and a post-dive photo-ID note on the manta they saw. That marine-science identity extends beyond mantas. The Maldives Underwater Initiative is one of the larger resort-based marine-biology teams in the country, working alongside Blue Marine Foundation and Olive Ridley Project. Nitrox is complimentary for certified divers and included in the standard dive price, and the dive team publishes fluency across ten languages, from English and German to Mandarin and Dhivehi. Because Deep Blue Divers is the sole operator working Laamu's reefs and Marine Protected Areas, the atoll's channel network stays largely uncrowded. Advanced Open Water certification and nitrox are strongly recommended for the stronger-current channel trips, including the manta dive itself.

What Divers Say

Deep Blue Divers is positioned less as a straightforward boat-and-bubbles operation and more as a science-adjacent diving experience. The Maldives Underwater Initiative and its Manta Trust partnership come up repeatedly as the differentiator: guests value the pre-dive briefing from a researcher and the post-dive photo-ID follow-up at Hithadhoo Corner, rather than just a guided swim past the cleaning station. Reviewers consistently praise equipment quality and dive-site variety, and being the atoll's only resort dive operator is framed as a core draw in itself: uncrowded, scientifically documented sites rather than sheer volume of named reefs. The house reef's ability to support night dives without a boat is another point guests highlight as a practical convenience. Third-party review volume is still thin relative to more established Maldives resorts, which fits an atoll with a single dive operator rather than the crowded competitive fields found elsewhere in the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Six Senses Laamu for diving?
Transfers to Laamu Atoll are arranged by the resort as part of a stay. Confirm current flight and transfer details directly with Six Senses Laamu when booking.
Is nitrox free or paid?
Complimentary for certified Enriched Air divers, included in the standard dive price. A Nitrox certification course is also offered and can be completed in a couple of hours with no diving required.
What experience level do I need?
Advanced Open Water certification and Nitrox are strongly recommended for the two-tank channel trips and the manta dive at Hithadhoo Corner, given the stronger currents there.
When is the best time to see mantas?
Sightings are possible year-round, but the courtship 'manta chain dance' behaviour peaks May-July and October-November.
Can I dive the house reef, or is it all boat trips?
Both. The house reef is strong enough that night dives run on it directly, no boat required, alongside up to three boat trips a day: an 8:30am two-tank channel/reef trip and 10:30am/3pm one-tank relaxed trips.
How are dive sites chosen?
As the only resort dive operator in Laamu Atoll, Deep Blue Divers has the atoll's channel network largely to itself. Hithadhoo Corner (the manta-cleaning station) is the site named consistently on the resort's own dive pages; other channels in the wider atoll rotation, including Fushi Kandu, are chosen by conditions and trip type on the day.
