Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of DiveCodex and DiveLog. We’ve kept them straightforward — no 50-page legal document, just the essentials both sides need to agree on.

Last updated: 22 March 2026

The short version

  • You own your data. Dive logs, photos, videos — it’s yours. Export or delete anytime.
  • Use the platform respectfully — don’t abuse it or harm others.
  • Reviews may be kept (anonymised) if you leave, to preserve community knowledge.
  • This is an independent project, not a company with SLAs — we do our best but can’t guarantee 100% uptime.
  • By using DiveCodex or DiveLog, you agree to these terms and our privacy policy.

What these services are

DiveCodex (divecodex.com) is a dive site reference and community platform. Anyone can browse the editorial guides without an account. With an account, you can contribute reviews, photos, and other content.

DiveLog(log.divecodex.com) is a dive logging application. You create an account to record, manage, and optionally share your dive history. Your dive data is portable — you can export it at any time in standard formats.

Both are personal projects created and maintained by Jouni Kuisma, based in Spain. They are provided as-is — a passion project by a diver, for divers.

Your account

To use DiveLog or contribute to DiveCodex, you need an account. When creating one:

  • Provide accurate information (a real email address you can access)
  • Keep your login credentials secure — you’re responsible for activity under your account
  • One account per person — don’t create multiple accounts
  • You must be at least 16 years old to create an account

You can delete your account at any time. When you do, your personal data (dive logs, profile, photos, club memberships) will be permanently removed. Reviews may be kept in anonymised form (see below). See our privacy policy for details on data handling.

Data ownership and portability

This is a fundamental principle: you own your data. We store it for you; we never claim ownership of it.

What you own

  • Dive logs — all your dive records, notes, gas data, buddy lists, and metadata
  • Photos and videos — all media you upload (you retain full copyright)
  • Profile data — your account information, preferences, and settings

Data portability

You can export your dive data at any time in portable formats. We believe your dive history should travel with you — not be locked into any single platform. We support data interoperability and will work to integrate with other diving applications where possible.

Full deletion

When you request account deletion, we permanently remove your dive logs, photos, videos, profile data, and club memberships. This is irreversible. We recommend exporting your data before deleting your account.

Photos and media rights

Your photos and videos

When you upload photos or videos, you retain full copyright. By uploading, you grant DiveCodex a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display your media on the platform. This licence exists solely so we can show your content as you intended (on dive site pages, your profile, etc.). You can revoke this licence at any time by removing your media or deleting your account.

Editorial photography

Photographs in DiveCodex editorial guides are copyright © their respective photographers (currently Jouni Kuisma / DiveCodex unless otherwise credited). All rights reserved. See our copyright policy for full details, licensing, and DMCA procedure.

Reviews and community contributions

Reviews, ratings, and comments are a shared community resource. Here is how they work:

  • You retain copyright of your review text
  • By posting a review, you grant DiveCodex a perpetual, non-exclusive licence to display it on the platform
  • If you delete your account, reviews are anonymised (your name and profile removed) but the review text may remain visible
  • You can request removal of specific reviews by contacting us

Why keep anonymised reviews? Dive site reviews help the community plan safer, better dives. Keeping them available (without your identity) preserves that shared value. This is similar to how restaurant review sites, travel platforms, and other community resources operate.

DiveCodex editorial content

The dive site guides, area overviews, and other editorial content on DiveCodex are copyright © DiveCodex. This content is researched and written by our editorial team using multiple publicly available sources.

You may reference and link to editorial content freely, and quote brief excerpts with attribution. Reproducing entire articles or substantial portions requires written permission. See our copyright policy for full details.

Acceptable use

We trust our users. In return, please:

  • ×Don’t use the platform to harass, impersonate, or harm other users
  • ×Don’t attempt to access other users’ private data
  • ×Don’t use automated tools to extract content at scale
  • ×Don’t post spam, malware, or illegal content
  • ×Don’t deliberately overload or disrupt the service
  • ×Don’t upload content that infringes others’ copyright or intellectual property

We reserve the right to suspend or remove accounts that violate these guidelines. We’ll try to communicate before taking action, except in cases requiring immediate response (security threats, illegal activity).

Limitations and liability

Service availability

DiveCodex and DiveLog are provided “as is”. We aim for reliability but can’t guarantee uninterrupted service. This is a personal project — not a commercially-backed platform with enterprise SLAs. We may need to take the service offline for maintenance, and we do our best to minimise disruption.

Dive safety

Information on DiveCodex (dive site descriptions, depths, conditions, difficulty ratings) is for general reference only. It is not a substitute for professional dive training, local briefings, or your own judgment. Conditions change constantly. Always dive within your training and certification level, check current conditions locally, and follow your dive centre’s guidance.

User-generated content

DiveCodex is not responsible for the accuracy, completeness, or legality of content contributed by users (reviews, photos, comments). User contributions reflect individual opinions and experiences, not the views of DiveCodex.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, DiveCodex and its creator are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service. This includes, but is not limited to, loss of data, loss of profits, or personal injury. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you have paid us (which, since the service is free, is zero).

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the product evolves. When we make meaningful changes, we’ll update this page and the “last updated” date above. For significant changes that affect your rights, we may also notify you via email or an in-app notice.

Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms. If you disagree with changes, you can stop using the service and delete your account.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Spain. Any disputes will be resolved under Spanish jurisdiction. As an EU-based service, your rights under EU consumer protection and data protection laws (including GDPR) are fully respected.
