The dive
El Negre is not one dive but several. The ridge runs parallel to the Mataro coast for a kilometre and a half, and centres choose a section based on depth preference and conditions. On the main section at 15-26 metres, the porous biogenic rock rises about two metres from the sand, its surface riddled with holes sheltering moray eels, spiny lobsters, and congers. Drop to El Negret at 23-28 metres and the gorgonians appear — Eunicella fans growing from the deeper portions of the rock. A flashlight transforms every crevice into a gallery of nudibranchs, particularly at the Mataro end where El Triangul earned its local reputation as the richest nudibranch habitat on the coast.
What makes it special
Where other Maresme sites offer a single ridge to explore, El Negre gives divers a menu. Five named sections at different depths mean a pair of dives can cover completely different terrain without repeating. The rock itself is unusual — porous, biogenic, described by local marine guides as resembling tropical coral barrier in structure. This porosity creates the crevice density that makes El Negre the richest critter habitat on the Mataro coast. In early summer, the site takes on a different dimension entirely: eagle rays migrate through in groups that local divers have described in the hundreds, turning a reef dive into an open-water spectacle.
Know before you go
A flashlight is not optional. Local divers stress carrying one on every El Negre dive — the porous rock creates overhangs and pockets where the signature species shelter. Summer delivers the best visibility, described by experienced Mataro divers as spectacular, but rain and river runoff can cut clarity sharply. Plan deeper sections first and use a shallower ridge as your second dive. Watch the blue water beyond the ridge edge, especially in June and July, for the eagle ray schools that pass through unpredictably.
