Isdhoo

Sloping reef off Laamu's northernmost inhabited island; a gentle coral-garden dive in an atoll otherwise defined by its current-driven channels.

Last updated June 2026

The dive

The main dive at Isdhoo is a sloping reef — Isdhoo Muli — that descends gently from around 5 metres to 20 metres over a coral garden. In a Laamu context dominated by current-fed channels, this is the easy counterpart: no demanding current, no negative entries, no drift ascents. A scuba instructor who dived here in 2012 on a liveaboard passage through the atoll placed it in a nine-site Laamu itinerary alongside several channel dives. That was its role then and likely its role now: the calm site on the schedule, suitable for mixed ability groups.

The reef is consistent with what Laamu divers describe more broadly — healthy coral with soft coral cover and reef fish typical of an outer-atoll slope. Isdhoo sits at the northern tip of the eastern reef chain, as far from the resort cluster as it is possible to get in this atoll.

What makes it special

Isdhoo offers access to Laamu's northern reef system, which sees almost no regular diving traffic. The island is remote even by Maldivian standards, and the site's low profile means few other divers will be in the water at the same time. Whether the journey from the southern resort base — a significant boat ride each way — is worthwhile depends on the rest of the week's schedule.

Laamu's reefs are consistently described by returning divers as more intact than the central atolls, and the northern sites like Isdhoo share that character.

Know before you go

Confirm in advance that the operator includes Isdhoo in their current rotation. The distance from Six Senses Laamu and the Gan guesthouses makes this a less frequent destination than the southern channel sites. Carry a safety sausage — all Laamu diving is boat-based with drift-style pickup. Dry season (December to April) is the recommended window for the best visibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of dive is Isdhoo?
Isdhoo Muli is a sloping coral reef descending from around 5m to 20m — a gentle, easy profile with a coral garden and typical Laamu reef fish. It is the opposite end of the spectrum from Laamu's current-driven channels. The calm conditions make it suitable for Open Water divers and less experienced guests.
How far is Isdhoo from the Six Senses Laamu resort?
Isdhoo is the northernmost inhabited island in Laamu, at the far end of the eastern reef chain from the resort cluster. Travel time from the main resort base is significant — likely 30-60 minutes by boat depending on the operator. Confirm scheduling with your operator before planning a dive here.
What marine life can I expect at Isdhoo?
Site-specific data is thin. Area-wide across Laamu's reefs: sea turtles, eagle rays, reef fish including jacks, snappers, fusiliers, moray eels and typical soft and hard coral formations. The big pelagics associated with Laamu's channels are not reliably found on gentle slope dives like this one.
Is Isdhoo suitable for beginners?
Yes. The sloping reef profile to 20m is appropriate for Open Water certified divers. It is one of the more accessible Laamu sites in terms of conditions, with no significant current on the slope.
Is Isdhoo the same as Isdhoo Muli?
Isdhoo Muli (muli meaning the outer slope in Dhivehi) is the established dive name for the sloping reef at this island. Dive catalogs also list an Isdhoo Kandu as a separate channel feature nearby, but specific dive operator coverage for a channel here has not been confirmed.
