Aquarium

Also known as: Aquanum

Shallow colorful reef near Hurghada. Rich fish life.

The dive

Thousands of orange anthias greet you before you reach the reef top, their colour intensifying as you descend into the clear shallows around this oval coral block. The main reef can be circumnavigated in a single dive, but the satellite pinnacles are where the real theatre happens. On the west side, two large ergs host sweetlips in groups near their bases and squirrelfish tucked into shade. On the east, three smaller pinnacles form a coral garden labyrinth where trevally hunt among the passages. Between it all, sandy flats at 12-15m hold blue-spotted stingrays and the occasional crocodilefish. Under every overhang, glassfish form shimmering walls that part suddenly when a predator darts through — a spectacle that repeats throughout the dive without losing its impact.

What makes it special

No other Hurghada site matches the sheer volume of fish life packed into this reef. The nickname is earned: bannerfish drift in enormous schools along the walls, anthias blanket the reef top, goatfish work the sand in hundreds, and moray eels — giant, yellow-mouthed, geometric — occupy seemingly every suitable crevice. What elevates it beyond a species checklist is the behavioural richness: cleaner shrimp servicing morays, scorpionfish ambushing from coral-perfect camouflage, triggerfish defending territories. The reef also transforms completely at night, offering Hurghada's most accessible night dive with a cast of nocturnal hunters — lionfish, porcupinefish, prowling morays — replacing the daytime schools.

Know before you go

Conditions here are among the gentlest in the Hurghada area: minimal current, sheltered mooring, and shallow depth. The south-side mooring is protected from prevailing wind. Territorial Picasso triggerfish are the main hazard — if one comes at you, swim sideways out of its territory rather than ascending into its cone of aggression. For photography, the site rewards both wide-angle (schooling fish, coral gardens) and macro (morays, gobies, rays on sand). If your boat offers a night dive option at this site, take it — the transformation from daytime spectacle to nocturnal hunting ground is one of Hurghada's most memorable experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Gota Abu Ramada called 'The Aquarium'?
Hurghada's dive centres gave it the nickname for the extraordinary density and diversity of fish life packed into a single, contained reef. Bannerfish schools, clouds of orange anthias, walls of glassfish in every overhang, and over a dozen species of reef fish visible at any moment — all in shallow, clear water. The comparison to an aquarium is about concentration, not containment.
What's the best route around The Aquarium?
Three options depending on your air and interest. The west side features two large, lively pinnacles with sweetlips, squirrelfish, and soft coral stands. The east side has a labyrinth of three smaller ergs forming a coral garden where trevally hunt. A full circumnavigation covers both in a single dive. Most groups start on the sheltered south side where the boat moors.
Is The Aquarium good for night diving?
One of Hurghada's best night dive sites. The reef transforms after dark: porcupinefish that hide during the day emerge to feed, lionfish become active hunters, brain corals fill with prawns and crabs, and small morays patrol the reef base. The shallow depth and calm conditions make it comfortable even for divers new to night diving.
What photography setups work best here?
Both wide-angle and macro deliver results. Wide-angle captures the bannerfish schools, glassfish walls, and coral garden panoramas. Macro rewards patience on the sandy flats (blue-spotted stingrays, shrimp gobies) and the reef overhangs (morays with cleaner shrimp, geometric morays). The abundant ambient light at 9-15m means you can shoot without strobes in good conditions, though they help with colour.
How does The Aquarium compare to other Hurghada dive sites?
It consistently ranks as Hurghada's most popular reef dive, and for good reason — no other site in the area matches its fish density in such an accessible setting. Sabina Garden offers superior coral architecture, Erg Sabina offers a quieter macro-focused pinnacle, and sites like Abu Ramada South go deeper. The Aquarium's strength is the overall spectacle: more species, more individuals, more movement in every direction.
When during the day trip is The Aquarium usually scheduled?
Operators often reserve it as the final dive of the day — a relaxing, visually rewarding immersion after more challenging morning dives. The shallow depth means you can enjoy a full 45-55 minutes without pushing no-decompression limits, making it an ideal closer. It also works well as a first dive for less experienced groups.
