Kuredhdhoo Kandu

Advanced channel drift on the Gaafu Alifu rim, with grey reef sharks through a coral-walled passage at 20-30m; strong-current liveaboard dive in the far-south Maldives.

The dive

Entry is timed with the current at the channel mouth. The drift carries divers along the reef shoulder, past overhangs hung with gorgonian fans and clusters of soft coral, into the open passage. Sweetlips and snappers pack the sheltered recesses below; trevally sweep the open water above. Grey reef sharks appear quickly when the tidal flow is running — cruising across the channel in steady, unhurried passes at mid-water. Eagle rays transit the passage independently, crossing from wall to wall without acknowledging the divers below. The typical working depth follows the reef wall at 20-30m; the channel floor descends further but recreational divers stay on the shoulder. Boat pickup is downcurrent after the drift.

What makes it special

Kuredhdhoo Kandu delivers the Gaafu Alifu channel template in a site that draws little diver traffic. The same tidal forces that concentrate grey reef sharks and eagle rays also shape the coral communities on the walls: overhangs cut from the current, gorgonians anchored perpendicular to the flow, and the dense shadow life — sweepers, glassfish, and juveniles — sheltering behind the structure. The dive is current-dependent and honest about it. When conditions run, the channel comes alive. When they don't, the walls alone reward a slow passage. It sits on a route that most divers pass through on the way to Vilingili Kandu, and the relative quiet is part of its character.

Know before you go

A reef hook is not optional — carry one and know how to deploy it before you arrive. Current direction and strength determine entry point; confirm both with your guide at the briefing. The 3mm full wetsuit is standard across Gaafu Alifu; a hood adds warmth on longer hook-in sessions. Nitrox extends bottom time at the typical 20-30m observation depth and is available on most deep-south liveaboards. The channel coordinates on most platforms are approximate — boat operators and dive guides navigate by local knowledge and tidal timing, not GPS.

Why Dive Kuredhdhoo Kandu

What makes this dive site stand out.

  1. 1
    Grey reef shark channel

Sharks patrol the open passage in current; quality tied directly to tidal state.

  2. 2
    Coral-walled drift

Steep walls with gorgonians and soft corals frame the passage at 20-30m.

  3. 3
    Eagle ray transits

Eagle rays cross the channel mid-water alongside trevally and barracuda schools.

  4. 4
    Remote far-south access

Reached by liveaboard or Kooddoo-area resort; minimal diver traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How strong are the currents at Kuredhdhoo Kandu?
Currents can be moderate to strong — the channel is tidal and quality swings dive-to-dive. Operators time entry for optimal flow. When current is absent, marine life disperses and the dive becomes a quieter reef exploration. Bring a reef hook and defer to your guide on conditions.
What marine life can I expect at Kuredhdhoo Kandu?
Grey reef sharks are the primary draw, patrolling the open channel when current runs. Eagle rays transit mid-water, and trevally schools and barracuda work the edges. The channel walls hold sweetlips, snappers, and sweepers under the overhangs.
Is Kuredhdhoo Kandu suitable for Open Water divers?
No. The strong tidal current, drift entry, required reef hook use, and 20-30m working depth make this an advanced dive. AOW certification and prior current-diving experience are strongly recommended.
How do I reach Kuredhdhoo Kandu?
Via liveaboard itinerary on a deep-south Maldives route, or from a Kooddoo-area resort using a guided boat transfer. The gateway is Kooddoo Airport (GKK), approximately 60-70 minutes by domestic flight from Male. No shore access exists.
When is the best time to dive Kuredhdhoo Kandu?
November through April, during the NE dry monsoon. Seas are calmer, visibility peaks at 25-30m, and tidal currents are more reliable. The wet season (May-September) brings heavier swell and reduced visibility.
Do I need a reef hook at Kuredhdhoo Kandu?
Yes. Reef hooks are standard kit across Gaafu Alifu channel dives. They allow you to hold position against the current at the channel edge while watching pelagics. Hook into dead coral or rubble, never live reef.
