Kuredhdhoo Kandu
Advanced channel drift on the Gaafu Alifu rim, with grey reef sharks through a coral-walled passage at 20-30m; strong-current liveaboard dive in the far-south Maldives.

The dive
Entry is timed with the current at the channel mouth. The drift carries divers along the reef shoulder, past overhangs hung with gorgonian fans and clusters of soft coral, into the open passage. Sweetlips and snappers pack the sheltered recesses below; trevally sweep the open water above. Grey reef sharks appear quickly when the tidal flow is running — cruising across the channel in steady, unhurried passes at mid-water. Eagle rays transit the passage independently, crossing from wall to wall without acknowledging the divers below. The typical working depth follows the reef wall at 20-30m; the channel floor descends further but recreational divers stay on the shoulder. Boat pickup is downcurrent after the drift.
What makes it special
Kuredhdhoo Kandu delivers the Gaafu Alifu channel template in a site that draws little diver traffic. The same tidal forces that concentrate grey reef sharks and eagle rays also shape the coral communities on the walls: overhangs cut from the current, gorgonians anchored perpendicular to the flow, and the dense shadow life — sweepers, glassfish, and juveniles — sheltering behind the structure. The dive is current-dependent and honest about it. When conditions run, the channel comes alive. When they don't, the walls alone reward a slow passage. It sits on a route that most divers pass through on the way to Vilingili Kandu, and the relative quiet is part of its character.
Know before you go
A reef hook is not optional — carry one and know how to deploy it before you arrive. Current direction and strength determine entry point; confirm both with your guide at the briefing. The 3mm full wetsuit is standard across Gaafu Alifu; a hood adds warmth on longer hook-in sessions. Nitrox extends bottom time at the typical 20-30m observation depth and is available on most deep-south liveaboards. The channel coordinates on most platforms are approximate — boat operators and dive guides navigate by local knowledge and tidal timing, not GPS.
