Diving in Gaafu Alifu Atoll

Far-south Maldives atoll known for grey reef shark channels and big-pelagic drift diving, reached via Kooddoo gateway in the northern half of giant Huvadhoo.

Overview

Gaafu Alifu Atoll is the northern half of Huvadhoo, one of the world's largest natural atolls, sitting roughly 340-400 km south of Male in a stretch of the Indian Ocean that most Maldives itineraries never reach. Its dive identity is built on the kandus — channels cut through the outer reef rim where tidal current funnels big animals into the open passage. Grey reef sharks are the headline draw. Vilingili Kandu, at the atoll's capital island, has been named by experienced Maldives divers as the best channel dive in the country: on the right tidal phase, schools of 50 to 200 grey reef sharks cruise back and forth while divers watch from the rim, reef hooks deployed.

The wider atoll delivers the same current-driven template at other kandus along the rim. Eagle rays transit the passages at mid-water; large Napoleon wrasse appear around the channels; green turtles show on most dives. Reef mantas visit cleaning stations area-wide, with the wet season (May-September) bringing more frequent encounters. Whale sharks appear near Kooddoo in January through April, occasionally accessible for night snorkelling from the resort at anchor.

The central draw beyond any single site is the quiet. The Kooddoo-to-Male liveaboard crossing is an itinerary little-travelled, and the sites here see a fraction of the traffic that the better-known central atolls attract. The same channel that produces a hundred sharks one dive can be quieter on the next — current dependence is real, not a footnote — and that variability is accepted by the divers who come this far south specifically for it.

Planning your visit

Kooddoo Airport is the domestic gateway, reached in 60-70 minutes from Male. Resort guests transfer by speedboat from there; liveaboard passengers join or leave their vessel at Kooddoo, the standard start or end point for deep-south routes. Land-based diving from Kooddoo island covers the nearby house reefs and channels. For the full atoll — eastern and southern rim sites — a liveaboard is the practical choice; deep-south itineraries concentrate in the first quarter.

Pack a reef hook for all major channel dives. Nitrox is worth arranging in advance: at 20-30m observation depth it extends the hook-in window meaningfully. A 3mm full wetsuit is standard year-round; a hood adds comfort on long stationary sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the far-south Maldives worth the extra journey?
For big-animal channel diving, the far south delivers what the central atolls cannot reliably match: fewer divers in the water, grey reef shark schools measured in the dozens to hundreds depending on current, and an undisturbed pace. The trade-off is logistics — a domestic flight to Kooddoo and typically a liveaboard commitment — but experienced Maldives divers consistently rank Gaafu Alifu's channels among the best in the country.
What is the best dive in Gaafu Alifu Atoll?
Vilingili Kandu is the standout site by reputation and documented experience. It has been specifically named by experienced Maldives divers as the best channel dive in the country, with schools of grey reef sharks that can reach 50 to 200 animals when conditions are right. The adjacent reef area adds eagle rays, large Napoleon wrasse, and turtles on quieter current days.
When is the best time to dive Gaafu Alifu Atoll?
January through April, during the NE dry monsoon. Seas are calmest, visibility peaks at 25-35m, and the tidal currents that concentrate grey reef sharks in the channels are most reliable. Whale sharks also appear near Kooddoo during this window. The wet season (May-September) brings rougher conditions but more frequent reef manta sightings.
What sharks and rays will I see in Gaafu Alifu?
Grey reef sharks are the headline species, schooling in the kandus when current runs. Eagle rays cross the channels at mid-water. Reef mantas visit cleaning stations, with more frequent appearances in the wet season. Whitetip reef sharks and nurse sharks are present area-wide. Tiger sharks are not a Gaafu Alifu offering — the baited tiger-shark dive associated with the far south is at Fuvahmulah, a separate atoll further south.
Is Gaafu Alifu suitable for beginner divers?
The flagship channel dives — Vilingili Kandu, Kuredhdhoo Kandu, Nilandhoo Kandu — require Advanced Open Water certification, current-diving experience, and reef hook skills. They are not suitable for beginners. Kooddoo Kandu is rated moderate and accessible with an AOW qualification. The atoll's calmer thilas and giris offer a gentler introduction but are not what most divers travel this far south for.
Liveaboard or resort for Gaafu Alifu?
Both are possible, but liveaboard is the standard and covers far more of the atoll. Resorts on Kooddoo island offer land-based access to nearby channels and house reefs. For the full channel spread — including Vilingili, Nilandhoo, Kondey, and Maarehaa — a liveaboard reaching the far south is the practical choice. The Kooddoo-to-Male crossing is a recognised route that sees little traffic.
Do I need a reef hook in Gaafu Alifu?
Yes. Reef hooks are standard kit for all the major channel dives. The observation position at each kandu involves holding station against the current on the channel rim while watching pelagics cross the passage. Hook into dead coral or rubble, never into live reef.
