La Red
Deep reef site near Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
The dive
The dual name tells you the route. Begin deep at La Red — the southern slope where rock descends to sand at 35 metres and the remains of an old fishing net have been absorbed into the reef, layered in sponges and false coral. Scorpionfish, lobsters, and conger eels occupy crevices here while barracuda patrol the water column beyond the slope edge. Ascend through the Cabeza del camello at 18-24 metres — a rock entirely encased in electric-yellow Parazoanthus anemone that glows against the surrounding blue — and finish in El Jardín: an expansive shallow platform at 8-12 metres carpeted with more anemone colonies, gobies, and nudibranchs.
What makes it special
Two fundamentally different dives share a single profile. The deep section delivers scale — barracuda, red scorpionfish, lobsters in crevices, and the strange sight of a fishing net that the reef has swallowed whole. El Jardín delivers detail — Hypselodoris tricolor nudibranchs, invertebrate communities in every crack, and the kind of close-focus opportunities that keep macro photographers occupied through an entire safety stop. The Cabeza del camello bridges both zones as a natural compass point: a single rock so thoroughly covered in golden anemone that it stands out from 10 metres away.
Know before you go
Nitrox extends your time in La Red meaningfully — on air the 25-35m zone gives perhaps 15 minutes before you need to ascend, while EAN32 buys five to seven additional minutes where the most interesting life concentrates. Reversing the route wastes gas on a return descent, so commit to the deep-first plan. The transition through the Cabeza del camello at 18-24m is where most divers switch from wide-angle awareness to macro focus as El Jardín opens up above. Currents are negligible here — this is a sheltered section of the Port Salvi zone, making it reliable when more exposed sites are marginal.
