Mofzaa Thila
Southeast Gaafu Dhaalu coral pinnacle in the far-south Maldives, a thila of overhangs and moderate current that draws grey reef sharks and eagle rays.

The dive
A coral-garden summit caps a pinnacle that falls away into blue water on every side. Mofzaa Thila is dived in moderate current, and that flow is the point. Work the sheltered flank where gorgonians drape the overhangs, and watch the edge: grey reef sharks patrol the drop-offs, Napoleon wrasse drift in close, and eagle rays cross over the structure.
Under the overhangs the fish stack up out of the current. Sweetlips, snappers and clouds of sweepers shelter in the lee, with morays in the coral and scorpionfish among the rubble. The shallow summit keeps much of the dive in easy depth, even as the sides drop past recreational range.
What makes it special
Mofzaa is the far south's current thila. Most of Gaafu Dhaalu's pinnacles are the calm option, coral and macro in sheltered water away from the channels. This one sits in the southeast and carries moderate flow, so it pulls sharks, Napoleon wrasse and eagle rays to the structure the way a channel would, without committing you to a full drift. You get pinnacle diving with a pelagic edge.
It also feels remote. Few boats, long transfers and a lightly dived reef give the dive a frontier quality the central atolls have lost.
Know before you go
The current is both the draw and the hazard. It brings the big animals in, but it can turn tricky and rise, so let the crew read the conditions and time the drop. Carry an SMB, stay with the group, and bring a torch for the overhangs. Watch your depth on the flanks and plan gas and no-deco on your computer.
Aim for the first quarter for the clearest water and calmest surface. The wet season trades some clarity for plankton and better manta and whale-shark odds. Reaching the site takes a domestic flight to Kaadedhdhoo and a boat hop, booked through resort bases or a far-south liveaboard. </content>
