Montseny

Reef off the Costa del Maresme coast.

The dive

Descend to the top of the oval ridge at around 20 metres and choose a direction — the shape lets you circuit the entire structure rather than swimming a linear out-and-back. The rock hosts the standard Maresme cast of morays, scorpionfish, and conger eels in its crevices, with groupers holding position at the edges. Check the sand on both sides for electric rays, which have been recorded here in late summer. Yellow sponges dot the rock surface in places, adding patches of colour. The average depth sits right in the zone where Nitrox makes a material difference to how much of the ridge you can cover.

What makes it special

Montseny's oval footprint sets it apart from the linear ridges that define most Maresme diving. Instead of following a ridge to its end and turning back, you can work around the structure in a single loop, checking different exposures and habitats as the rock curves. The site sees modest but steady diver traffic, speaking to its role as a reliable mid-depth option in the Port Balis roster. The late-summer electric ray sightings on the flanking sand give it a seasonal draw that the shallower ridges lack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Montseny recommended for Nitrox?
The ridge sits at 19-28m with most of the dive spent around 20-25m. On air, that depth range eats through your no-decompression limit quickly. Nitrox extends your bottom time enough to actually work the full oval rather than rushing the second half.
What shape is the reef at Montseny?
Unlike the long, linear barras typical of Maresme, Montseny is an oval-shaped rocky ridge. This means you can circumnavigate the entire structure in one dive rather than swimming out and back along a linear formation.
Are the yellow sponges at Montseny unusual?
Yellow sponges are noted as occasional finds here — not common enough to define the dive but distinctive enough to be worth noting. They add colour to what is otherwise typical Mediterranean rocky substrate.
What are the Barras de Mataró?
A geological system of six parallel rocky ridges along the Maresme coast, formed by tectonic movements. The ridges step down from near the beach to around 30 metres depth. Montseny sits on one of these ridges at 19-28 metres. This stepped structure means the coast offers dive sites at every depth level, each ridge with its own community of marine life.
Is Montseny suitable for Open Water divers?
It is listed as all levels, but the 19-28 metre depth range means Open Water divers will be near or at their certification limit for much of the dive. You can work the top of the oval at 19-20 metres comfortably, but the deeper sections around 25-28 metres are better suited to Advanced Open Water certification. Nitrox makes a practical difference at either level.
