The dive
Two different dives share one entry point. Inside the harbour basin, calm and current-free at about six metres, dive buses pull straight up to the mooring platforms and there's no long gear carry before the water. Certified divers can also head outside the harbour wall, where the reef breaks at 18 metres and continues into what locals call the 3-anchor tour: one anchor at 27 metres, a reef edge leading to a tunnel at 28 metres, another anchor just beyond it, and a third tucked into a crack in the reef on the return leg. Rays, octopus and cuttlefish turn up on the outer reef from time to time, alongside the grouper, parrotfish and cleaner shrimp that work the rock year-round.
What makes it special
Everything else in the Puerto de la Cruz cluster asks for a boat, Advanced certification, or both. This site doesn't. It's the one dive here that works for Open Water divers and beginner courses without leaving the harbour, while the outer reef still gives certified divers a real second dive: more depth, a tunnel, and three distinct anchor points to work through. That combination, sheltered beginner water paired with a proper outer-reef route, is what separates it from the boat-only advanced sites nearby.
Know before you go
A torch is worth having for the outer reef after dark; night dives run down to 18 metres on the same route. Spanish law requires a marker buoy for surfacing more than 50 metres from a boat, plus a dedicated boat guard on boat dives generally. Visibility across the wider Puerto de la Cruz coast typically exceeds 20 metres, and the site is diveable year-round. Atlantik, El Cardumen and Teide Divers all operate from the harbour and can arrange either half of the dive.
