The dive

A fossil coral tower on the shore marks the start. Descending to 12m, you reach the first pinnacle hanging off a vertical wall, a fan coral spreading underneath it. Smaller pinnacles ring the base like a necklace.

Follow the reef around and the wall opens into the site's centrepiece: a U-shaped canyon cutting deep into the reef. At 18m, small overhangs shelter glassfish and cave sweepers. Light penetrates from above, filling the canyon with shifting beams. The vertical crack continues far below recreational limits, but the upper section delivers the spectacle.

Past the canyon, the terrain shifts from vertical wall to a sloping bottom. A ridge at 22m is studded with pinnacles worth exploring for pyjama nudibranchs clinging to red fire sponges. The dive finishes at a large pinnacle blanketed in blue stag coral, where sergeant majors school around your safety stop.

What makes it special

Most of Sharm's local shore dives are gentle coral gardens. Tower breaks that pattern. The vertical canyon is more typical of the dramatic walls at Ras Mohammed or the Straits of Tiran, but it is reachable without a park permit or a long boat ride. The three-zone structure (wall, canyon, pinnacle slope) packs topographic variety into a single dive that few local sites match.

The atmospheric lighting through the canyon is the headline. Where the reef juts into open water, sunlight cuts through the vertical walls and reaches deep. For photographers, the combination of wide-angle canyon shots and macro subjects on the pinnacles covers both ends of the lens range.

Know before you go

Tower is typically dived as a drift from a boat, but shore entry is possible from the Ras Umm Sid headland. The pinnacle field beyond the canyon can be disorienting. Nitrox is worth considering for extended time in the 18-25m zone. One fissure within the pinnacles is off-limits to protect delicate gorgonians growing inside. The canyon crack extends well beyond recreational depth, so keep an eye on your computer when exploring the wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What certification do I need to dive Tower in Sharm El Sheikh?
Open Water certification is enough for the wall and upper canyon between 12 and 18m. For the deeper pinnacle field at 22-30m and full canyon exploration, Advanced Open Water is recommended. Some local centers may require AOW for the full dive profile.
Can I shore dive at Tower?
Yes. Tower is one of Sharm's local sites accessible from shore, with the fossil coral tower marking the entry point. It is also commonly dived as a drift dive from a boat.
What marine life will I see at Tower?
The canyon overhangs shelter dense schools of glassfish and cave sweepers. The pinnacles host pyjama nudibranchs on red fire sponges, and the final pinnacle is covered in blue stag coral. Moray eels, scorpionfish, and crocodilefish are common across the site.
Is Tower good for underwater photography?
The canyon is a strong draw for photographers. Sunlight penetrates the vertical walls and creates dramatic beams. Macro subjects include pyjama nudibranchs on fire sponges and small starfish on the pinnacles. The blue stag coral on the final pinnacle provides a colorful backdrop.
How does Tower compare to Temple in Sharm El Sheikh?
Both are local sites near Ras Umm Sid, but they differ in character. Tower is a wall and canyon dive with vertical topography reaching 30m. Temple is a shallower pinnacle labyrinth at 5-20m with a more complex navigation challenge. Tower suits divers who enjoy depth and dramatic geology, while Temple is better for those wanting navigation variety at easier depths.
Is Tower a good night dive?
Yes. Spanish dancers and free-swimming moray eels have been reported at Tower after dark. The canyon and pinnacle structures create varied habitats for nocturnal species. The neighbouring Temple site is also used for night dives in the same area.
