Diving in Malapascua
The threshers moved to Kimud Shoal in 2022: dawn dives on an Endangered pelagic shark, plus muck diving minutes off the beach.
Last updated August 2026

Overview
Malapascua is a 2.5 km island off the northern tip of Cebu, and one animal built its dive economy. Pelagic thresher sharks, listed Endangered, rise to a shallow seamount to be cleaned by wrasse, and the boats leave in the dark to be there when they arrive1. The seamount changed in 2022: most of the threshers left Monad Shoal for Kimud Shoal, 7 km away and shallower, where they are cleaned at 12 to 15 metres2. Many published guides still name the old shoal. Monad is dived now as the depth and buoyancy dive before Kimud, and as the one place here a tiger shark turns up.
The rest of the roster is closer in and quieter. Bantigue and Ka Osting are sand and rubble sites five minutes off the beach, and both dive better after dark than in daylight. Gato Island, 45 minutes northwest, holds resident whitetip reef sharks and a sea krait breeding colony; its cavern is still dived from the openings, but the traverse under the island has been shut since the September 2025 earthquake. Wrecks lie north and west, from the Tapilon at 22 to 28 metres to the Doña Marilyn ferry, whose hull is now the only hard structure on a sand plain and carries black coral3. At dusk the mandarinfish spawn on the house reefs, under red light only.
Planning your visit
Fly into Mactan-Cebu and allow four to six hours door to door. The coastguard stops the Maya crossing in the late afternoon, so a late arrival means a night on the mainland, and the first public boat of the day is too late for the shark trip, which leaves between 04:30 and 06:00.
The thresher dive is governed by law now, and not the law you would expect. Kimud Shoal lies in the municipal waters of Tabango, in Leyte, a different province from everything else here, and Tabango's ordinance sets the terms4. Diving runs 06:00 to 14:00, capped at 60 minutes, at 300 pesos per diver per day. No light of any kind goes near the sharks, and no gloves, reef hooks or pointers. Every Open Water diver does a buoyancy workshop first, whatever the logged-dive count, and below 50 dives goes with an instructor or divemaster at capped ratios. Bring a certification card and a logbook, and expect your name on a coast guard manifest5.
There is still no working recompression chamber on Malapascua. Treatment means Mandaue City6, at the far end of both the crossing and the drive, so ask a centre what oxygen it carries on day boats.
Geology & underwater terrain
Three settings. Two shallow seamounts southeast of the island, locally called sunken islands, with plateau tops around 15 to 25 metres dropping past 200 metres. A limestone islet at Gato cut by caves and a tunnel that runs right under the northern half. And the island shelf itself: fringing reef, isolated flat-topped pinnacles at 12 to 16 metres with walls to 30, and sand and rubble slopes that carry the macro reputation. The Bogo Bay Fault, identified after the magnitude 6.9 earthquake of 30 September 2025, runs through the same water.
Safety considerations
What can go wrong here, and what divers do about it. Conditions change - take the briefing from the operator on the day.
- Current: The seamounts sit in open water and Maria's Point is a current dive; the Lapus Lapus return leg is reported to run strong after about 60 minutes.Dive the shoals with an operator that briefs the site, stay with the group, and carry an SMB.
- Overhead: Gato Island has a cavern that groups enter from its openings, and the traverse right under the island has been closed since the 2025 earthquake.Treat the cavern as an overhead dive with a qualified guide and a torch each, and take the ban on the through swim at face value.
- Depth: The Doña Marilyn seabed lies at 30 to 33 metres and the Pioneer at 52 to 56, past recreational limits.Match sites to certification, plan gas conservatively, and use nitrox where the operator recommends it.
- Remote location: No working recompression chamber is on the island, and the boat crossing to the mainland stops in the late afternoon.Carry dive insurance, ask what oxygen a centre keeps on the boat, and keep profiles conservative.

A soft coral slope off Malapascua's north west point, dived from a coral garden at 8 m down to sand at 22 m, with no mooring and current on the way back.
Monad Shoal
The seamount that made Malapascua famous for thresher sharks, now a deep dawn vigil over a bare plateau where tiger sharks occasionally pass.
North Point
A current-swept soft coral garden off Malapascua's northern tip, worked as a drift over broken rock, with one overhang big enough to fill a dive.
Pioneer Wreck
An upright Japanese wreck of the Second World War 6 km north of Malapascua, deck at 46 metres and seabed at 56, on staged decompression.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you see thresher sharks in Malapascua, Monad Shoal or Kimud Shoal?▾
Kimud Shoal. Most of the threshers stopped cleaning at Monad in 2022 and moved 7 km to Kimud, which is shallower and about an hour out by boat. They still turn up at Monad occasionally, so it is not a complete abandonment, but Kimud is where the dive happens now. Many operator pages and guidebooks have not been updated and still name Monad as the thresher site, which is worth checking before you book.
Do you need 50 logged dives to dive Kimud Shoal?▾
No, and the shorthand has now outlived the rule that produced it. Kimud Shoal has had its own municipal ordinance since February 2026, and that ordinance names Open Water as the entry certification. What it asks of every Open Water diver, at any logged-dive count, is a buoyancy control workshop before the dive. Fifty dives is a second threshold stacked on top: below it, an Open Water diver is also supervised, at a maximum of four per instructor or two to three per divemaster. Carry the card and the logbook, because the dive team checks both. Discover Scuba, try dives, Open Water course training dives, snorkelling and freediving are prohibited outright.
Can an Open Water diver do the thresher shark dive?▾
Yes, and the law says so rather than just the shops. Open Water is the entry certification for Kimud Shoal, with the buoyancy workshop first and supervision below 50 dives. Operators sell the dive to Open Water divers and one prices a package that puts an instructor alongside. The usual shape is a preparation dive at Monad Shoal, which is deeper, then Kimud, where the sharks are cleaned at 12 to 15 metres. Depth is not the limiting factor. Buoyancy is: Kimud is covered in coral where Monad is sand, and hovering still without touching anything is the whole skill the dive asks for.
How likely is a tiger shark at Monad Shoal?▾
Low on any given morning. Reports from late 2025 through 2026 settle at around one animal seen per week at the shoal, shared out across every boat on the mooring, and the rate swings with whether a particular tiger is in residence that month. The 10 to 20 percent figure on one operator's page has nothing independent behind it. Monad is still worth the dive as the historic shoal and as the depth and buoyancy dive before Kimud. Treat the tiger as a bonus, and ask your guide to work the drop-off rather than sit on sand.
Is there a hyperbaric chamber on Malapascua?▾
No. A chamber for Malapascua was contracted in late 2024 and was not operational as of February 2025, when the whole country had three working chambers. The nearest is at the TIEZA field office in Mandaue City, a four person unit that has run since 2014, which sits at the far end of a three to four hour road transfer plus the boat crossing. Ask a centre how much emergency oxygen it carries on day trips, and carry dive insurance.
Is Gato Island open after the 2025 earthquake?▾
The island is, the tunnel is not. Gato came back about a month after the magnitude 6.9 Bogo Bay Fault quake of 30 September 2025, and the walls, the cavern and the whitetips have been dived normally ever since. The traverse that runs right under the island did not come back. Divers were still being told it was banned in June 2026, and nobody has put a reopening date in writing: not the shops, not the municipality, not any survey. The island was surveyed for structural damage around 24 November 2025 and the results were never made public. Much of the confusion comes from the word swim-through, of which Gato has several, so a diver passing one of those is not passing the tunnel. Nothing was published about the shoals, the local reefs or the wrecks either, so descriptions written before October 2025 should be read with that in mind.
How do you get from Cebu airport to Malapascua, and how long does it take?▾
Allow four to six hours door to door. From Mactan-Cebu it is three to four hours by road over about 130 km to Maya Port, by private transfer, taxi, bus or van, then a 30 to 40 minute boat crossing. A Government Environmental Fee of 140 pesos per person and a boat manifest are handled at the check-in office. The coastguard stops crossings in the late afternoon, so arriving at Maya after about 17:00 usually means a night on the mainland or a private boat.
Can you arrive and do the thresher dive the same morning?▾
Not on the public boat. The first crossing is around 07:00 and the shark boats leave between 04:30 and 06:00. Divers who have made it work were collected at Maya Port by a dive boat and taken straight onto the trip with their luggage aboard, arranged with the centre in advance and paid for separately.
When is the best time of year to dive Malapascua?▾
The island dives year round and so do the sharks, so the season affects clarity and comfort rather than whether the headline dive happens. The Visayan Sea has a dry season from November to April and a rainy one from May to October. Visibility is usually best from January to April. Water sits at 26 to 29°C for most of the year and drops to 24 to 26°C in January and February. Tropical cyclone signals stop the crossing outright, which is a trip risk rather than a diving one.
Malapascua or Moalboal if you only have time for one?▾
They are different products on the same island, three to four hours apart by road. Malapascua is a pelagic destination with a pre-dawn clock and a macro roster around it. Moalboal is a resident sardine baitball you walk into from the beach, with turtles and a wall, on a normal schedule. Choose Malapascua if the thresher dive is the point of the trip, Moalboal if you want easy diving and a lie-in. Divers who combine hubs more often pair Malapascua with Bohol or Southern Leyte than with Moalboal, because the road transfer within Cebu is the real cost.
