About

Inside the Copacabana Hotel at Valdevaqueros, past the dive shop and classrooms, GoDive Tarifa runs a working laboratory. University partnerships keep it active with marine biology and underwater archaeology projects tied to the Parque Natural del Estrecho. For a recreational dive center, it is an unusual thing to have. It is also central to what the instructors do on the water.

GoDive holds SSI Instructor Training Center status and covers the full curriculum, from pool baptisms for children to Extended Range technical programs with closed-circuit rebreathers and sidemount rigs. The center also offers DPV experience dives and TEK introductions for certified divers who want a taste of technical setups before committing to a course. Courses carry optional ACUC, PADI, and FEDAS pathways alongside SSI. A monohull Bertram named Nostromo departs from Puerto de Tarifa, with transfers from the Valdevaqueros base included. Ten sites are on the roster, split across the Atlantic and Mediterranean faces of Isla de las Palomas. Depths run from 3 metres at La Garita to over 35 metres at Punta Marroqui. Three accessible wrecks include the 1905 steamship Frieda at Las Calderas and the 19th-century Pecio de San Andres.

The center is closed Mondays and operates Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 18:00. Full equipment rental is available, including 5mm and 7mm wetsuits suited to the Strait's 16 to 19 degree water year-round.

What Divers Say

More than 1,400 Google reviews at 4.9 out of 5 make GoDive the highest-rated by volume among Tarifa dive centers. Three instructors appear by name across multiple years of assessments: Alvaro, Ramon, and Elias. The recurring description is of guides who manage marine fauna knowledge and beginner anxiety in equal measure. Multiple reviewers compare the underwater landscape around Isla de las Palomas to diving inside an aquarium.

First-time divers make up a large share of the feedback, and the pattern is consistent: felt safe, learned more than expected, wanted to return. Returning visitors and experienced divers single out instructor attentiveness and the quality of site briefings. A handful of reviews flag preparation time running long relative to bottom time on busy try-dive days, particularly for group baptisms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the marine research laboratory at GoDive Tarifa?
GoDive maintains a working laboratory and classroom inside its Valdevaqueros headquarters, used for marine biology and underwater archaeology projects in collaboration with universities. It is not a display space. The research focus carries into guided dives, with instructors providing detailed identification of local species and habitats during excursions.
What makes GoDive different from other Tarifa dive centers?
The combination of an active research laboratory, technical diving with CCR and sidemount rigs, and a 4.9 rating across more than 1,400 reviews is unusual for a single center. Instructor names (Alvaro, Ramon, Elias) recur across years of reviews, suggesting a stable team rather than seasonal turnover.
Does GoDive Tarifa offer technical diving?
Yes. The technical program includes Extended Range dives, closed-circuit rebreather diving, sidemount configurations, and a TEK Experience for certified divers who want to try technical setups. Nitrox fills are also available.
How much does a try dive cost at GoDive?
A pool baptism at El Palmar costs 20 EUR for 45 minutes. An open water baptism in Tarifa with two dives costs 75 EUR per person, or 120 EUR as a couples package. Children from age 10 can participate in the open water version; the pool option starts at 12.
Where is GoDive based and how does the logistics work?
The main base is inside the Copacabana Hotel at Valdevaqueros, roughly 10 minutes by car from the port. GoDive provides transfers from headquarters to Puerto de Tarifa, where their Bertram monohull Nostromo departs for the dive sites. The base houses reception, shop, classrooms, and the research laboratory.
What dive sites does GoDive cover?
Ten sites around Isla de las Palomas, split across Atlantic and Mediterranean waters. The Mediterranean side includes La Piscina, known for turtle sightings, and the shallow La Garita reef. On the Atlantic side, Los Pasillos and La Pared offer coral walls and morays. Three historic wrecks are accessible: Las Calderas (steamship Frieda, 1905) at 14 to 25 metres, the deeper Punta Marroqui sites, and the Pecio de San Andres at 25 to 40 metres.
