Hafsa Thila

Western-rim thila in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Maldives — a submerged pinnacle offering beginner-friendly reef diving as a calm break from the atoll's current-driven channel sites.

Last updated June 2026

The dive

Hafsa Thila is a submerged pinnacle on the western rim of Gaafu Alifu Atoll, topped with coral and ringed by slopes that extend to roughly 30 metres. The summit sits around 15 metres — shallow enough for a long, unhurried time on the reef. Catalog accounts describe a coral garden with hard and soft corals, reef fish working the water column above, and groupers and moray eels tucked into the overhangs and ledges below. The pace is different from the channel sites that make up most of the Gaafu Alifu diving circuit: no strong current, no reef hook required to hold position, just the reef and its residents.

What makes it special

Gaafu Alifu is almost entirely a current-driven destination. The kandu channel dives — the sites that draw liveaboards south — run on strong tidal flow and reward advanced divers with pelagic density. Hafsa Thila offers a different proposition: a thila profile with gentler conditions, accessible to the whole group, that sits on the atoll's less-visited western rim. Diving pressure here is low even by the atoll's own remote standards. Napoleon wrasse and sea turtles have been noted by some accounts as approachable — consistent with low diver traffic on an undisturbed reef.

Know before you go

Coordinates for this site are approximate and unverified — the western-rim position is plausible but not confirmed against independent navigation data. The site is accessible only through a liveaboard or resort dive base operating in Gaafu Alifu. A reef hook is worth carrying across all Gaafu Alifu dives, even here, as area-wide current can arrive without warning. Water temperature holds at 27-30°C year-round; a 3mm wetsuit covers the full season. January through April gives the best overall conditions in the atoll.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hafsa Thila the same as the Hafsa Thila near Ukulhas in Ari Atoll?
No. Two sites share similar names. This Hafsa Thila is in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, on the far-south western rim of Huvadhoo, roughly 400km south of Malé. The Ari Atoll site — near Ukulhas — is a separate, well-documented shark cleaning station in the central Maldives. They are different locations with different dive characters.
What certification do I need to dive Hafsa Thila?
Open Water certification is sufficient for this site's depth profile. That said, reaching Gaafu Alifu requires a liveaboard or resort stay in the far south, so prior diving experience is a practical advantage even if not a formal requirement.
How does Hafsa Thila compare to the channel sites in the same atoll?
The kandu channel dives in Gaafu Alifu — such as Vilingili Kandu and Kuredhdhoo Kandu — are advanced current dives targeting grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and silvertips in strong tidal flow. Hafsa Thila is a thila, not a channel: calmer conditions, shallower profile, and reef fish rather than pelagic density.
How do I reach Hafsa Thila?
Via liveaboard on a deep-south Maldives itinerary, or from a resort dive base in Gaafu Alifu. The nearest domestic airport is Kooddoo (GKK), roughly 60-70 minutes from Malé. No shore access exists; this is a submerged oceanic pinnacle.
What marine life might I see at Hafsa Thila?
Reef fish — including butterflyfish, anthias, and angelfish — are consistent with this type of coral thila. Napoleon wrasse and sea turtles have been noted in catalog sources. Grey reef sharks and eagle rays patrol the broader atoll but are not confirmed specifically at this pinnacle.
When is the best time to dive in Gaafu Alifu Atoll?
January through April, during the northeast monsoon. This brings the calmest seas, strongest visibility, and most reliable tidal current for the channel sites. Hafsa Thila is diveable year-round, but this window gives the best overall conditions in the atoll.
