Nilandhoo Giri

Shallow coral pinnacle near Nilandhoo island in Gaafu Alifu, offering reef life and productive night-dive macro as a calm contrast to Huvadhoo's channel dives.

The dive

Nilandhoo Giri is a compact coral pinnacle topping out around 15 metres and ringed by a sand base. The dive descends onto the structure in calm, clear water and works around the pinnacle — soft corals on the flanks, reef fish in the water column above. Reef sharks pass occasionally. The dive is unhurried. After dark, the same formation yields something different: shrimps, crabs, and nudibranchs move out across the pinnacle surface in numbers the daytime dive doesn't hint at. Many liveaboard itineraries schedule both dives over the same formation in a single day.

What makes it special

Gaafu Alifu is a current-driven atoll. Most of its dive sites are channel dives requiring strong skills and reef hooks. Nilandhoo Giri is the exception: a giri that sits in relatively calmer water and runs at a depth accessible to the whole boat. Divers who have spent a morning gripping their reef hooks at Kooddoo Kandu find the afternoon here a genuine reset. The site's value isn't in the headline pelagics — those belong to the channels — it's in what a calm, well-lit reef pinnacle does well: macro, colour, and time to look closely. Night dives here are particularly productive by the atoll's standards, surfacing species that fast current and deep profiles make harder to find elsewhere on the circuit.

Know before you go

Reef hooks are standard kit for the Gaafu Alifu circuit and worth carrying even here, as area-wide current can arrive unpredictably. A 3mm wetsuit is comfortable year-round; a hood adds warmth during long surface intervals in open water between sites. The site is boat-access only, accessible through the liveaboard operator or resort dive base. January through April gives the best visibility and sea state for the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nilandhoo Giri worth diving if I'm on a Gaafu Alifu liveaboard?
Yes, particularly as an afternoon or night dive. After a morning at a high-current channel like Kooddoo Kandu, the calmer conditions here give your body a break while still producing good reef life and excellent macro after dark.
What marine life can I expect at Nilandhoo Giri?
The day dive offers reef fish, soft corals, and occasional grey reef sharks passing through. Night dives are productive for shrimps, crabs, and nudibranchs on the pinnacle surface.
How does Nilandhoo Giri compare to Nilandhoo Kandu?
Nilandhoo Kandu, roughly 2km north, is a current-swept channel dive with stronger pelagic encounters. Nilandhoo Giri is the calmer option on the same part of the atoll, often scheduled as the afternoon or night site when the kandu is the morning dive.
Do I need advanced certification to dive Nilandhoo Giri?
No. Open Water certification is sufficient for this site's shallow profile. The moderate rating reflects the remote setting and unpredictable area-wide current rather than the site's inherent difficulty.
When is the best time to dive in Gaafu Alifu Atoll?
January through April in the northeast monsoon season brings the clearest water and calmest seas. The atoll is diveable year-round, but visibility and sea state are most consistent in the first quarter of the year.
