Kooddoo kandu

Current-dependent channel at the Gaafu Alifu gateway island, drawing grey reef sharks and reef mantas; reachable by resort or liveaboard in far-south Maldives.

The dive

The entry point — north or south side of the pass — is set by the direction of tidal flow. Divers descend from the reef top at around 5-8m and work along the channel edge toward the corner zones where the current accelerates and pelagic traffic concentrates. At the observation point, reef hooks go in and the dive becomes stationary: watching the channel from the rim. Grey reef sharks cruise the open water, steady and unhurried. Eagle rays cut across at mid-water. Jacks hold position in the flow. When the hook-in phase ends, divers drift inside the channel along the wall, shallowing up through the reef structure before surfacing for boat pickup. The whole profile from reef top to channel floor spans 5-30m, giving the option to manage time across different depths.

What makes it special

Kooddoo Kandu is the channel dive at the front door of the deep south. It sits at the atoll's gateway island — where liveaboards pick up clients and the only domestic airport in Gaafu Alifu operates — which means most divers diving this atoll will dive it first. That positioning creates a specific character: it is a channel dive that can be done without the full expedition commitment of the more remote kandus. The Mercure resort's dive operation brings it within reach of resort guests who haven't signed up for a week-long safari. That said, the tidal rules still apply — when the current stops, so does the action. This is not a beginner dive dressed up as an easy one. It demands current experience and a reef hook; what it offers in return is the Gaafu Alifu channel experience without the long run south.

Know before you go

Timing matters more than anything else here. An incoming or outgoing current is what drives the sharks and rays into the channel. Confirm the tidal window with your guide before gearing up. The site can swing from an impressive shark encounter to a quiet reef exploration between dives. Nitrox is worth arranging in advance — at 25-30m, bottom time on air limits the observation window. A 3mm full wetsuit is standard; a hood helps on longer hook-in sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kooddoo Kandu like compared to Vilingili Kandu?
Kooddoo Kandu is more accessible — a short Dhoni ride from the Mercure resort and a natural first or last dive on liveaboard routes through the atoll. Vilingili Kandu, at the regional capital island further north, is the deeper-reputation shark channel with documented schools of 50 to 200 grey reef sharks. Both sites require AOW skills and a reef hook; Kooddoo is rated moderate, Vilingili advanced.
Can I dive Kooddoo Kandu as a resort guest without joining a liveaboard?
Yes. The Mercure Maldives Kooddoo resort runs guided dives at the channel as part of their dive program, with the site reached in approximately 10 minutes by Dhoni. This makes it one of the few Gaafu Alifu channels accessible without a full liveaboard commitment.
What marine life does Kooddoo Kandu offer?
Grey reef sharks are the main event when current is running. Eagle rays transit the channel regularly, and green turtles appear on the shallower reef sections. Reef mantas visit seasonally in plankton-rich water. Barracuda, jacks, and reef fish communities complete the channel ecosystem.
When is the best season for Kooddoo Kandu?
January to April, during the NE dry monsoon. Visibility is at its best (up to 30m), seas are calmest, and the current that drives marine life through the channel is most reliable. Whale sharks frequent the nearby resort area during this window, accessible for snorkeling at the Mercure anchorage.
Do I need a reef hook for Kooddoo Kandu?
Yes. Reef hooks are standard kit for channel diving in Gaafu Alifu. The hook lets you hold position against the current at the observation point while watching pelagics pass. Deploy into dead coral or rubble — never into live reef.
How far is Kooddoo Kandu from Male?
About 55-70 minutes by domestic flight from Velana International Airport (MLE) to Kooddoo Airport (GKK), then a short boat transfer to the dive site. There is no boat connection from Male — the domestic flight is the only practical route.
