The dive

The boat moors in the sheltered interior of Cala Ferriola, which means calm water for gearing up even when the open coast is choppy. Descend along the islet wall to a crevice at 12 metres. This is the tunnel entrance. The passage runs 30 metres northeast, wide enough to swim through relaxed and in good trim, with both exits visible from the moment you enter. Red coral and sponges cover the walls in colour that pops under a torch. At 25 metres, the tunnel opens to open water. Ahead, a canyon runs northeast to a sandy bottom at 29 metres where lobsters settle among the rocks. The return follows the outer face of the islet upward through 5 to 10 metres, past moray eels in the crevices and octopus in the holes, back to the boat.

What makes it special

La Ferriola is the most accessible tunnel dive in the Medes and Montgrí park area. La Vaca is deeper and more dramatic; La Pedrosa is longer with its chimney. This site suits those taking their first steps into overhead environments. The wide, straight passage never goes dark. A diver who hesitates at La Pedrosa's 70-metre length or La Vaca's 45-metre north wall will swim through La Ferriola and feel competent. The lobsters are what divers remember. Many in season, concentrated on the sandy canyon floor and in the tunnel crevices. No gorgonian walls here, unlike most Medes sites. The tunnel character is red coral and invertebrates on rock.

Know before you go

Fin technique matters inside the tunnel. The floor is sandy and a careless kick throws up a silt cloud that reduces visibility for everyone behind you. Horizontal trim and short, controlled strokes keep the water clear. Midday is the best time if photography is the goal: backlight enters both tunnel mouths simultaneously. The 29-metre canyon is optional. OW divers on a guided first tunnel dive can stay shallower and skip it. Nitrox 32 is available and worth it if you want time at the canyon floor. Boat travel from L'Estartit is 25 minutes each way, slightly longer than the Medes island sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is La Ferriola suitable for beginners and Open Water divers?
Yes. Multiple operators describe it as one of the best introductory sites on the Costa Brava. The tunnel is wide and both exits are visible throughout, so there is no disorientation risk. OW divers must dive with a guide per park regulations (max 4:1 instructor ratio). The optional canyon at 29 m can be skipped for a shallower profile.
How long is the tunnel at La Ferriola and do I need a torch?
The tunnel is approximately 30 metres long. Both exits remain visible from start to finish, so a torch is not required for navigation. A small light does help reveal the detail of the red coral and invertebrates on the tunnel walls, which appear grey without artificial light.
What marine life can I see at La Ferriola?
Lobsters are the defining species. They shelter in tunnel crevices and on the sandy bottom at the base of the canyon. Red coral lines the tunnel walls alongside sponges, conger eels, and forkbeard. The return circuit around the islet produces octopus and moray eels. Dusky grouper are present but less prominent than at core Medes reserve sites.
How does La Ferriola compare to La Vaca?
Both are roughly 30 m tunnels in the same natural park, but the experience differs. La Vaca cuts through Meda Gran island with three entrances and a gorgonian wall to 45 m outside. La Ferriola is in a sheltered cove on the mainland coast, with a canyon to 29 m and a focus on lobsters and red coral. La Ferriola is generally the calmer, more sheltered option.
What is the depth profile at La Ferriola?
The dive starts at 4 m alongside the islet in the sheltered cove. The tunnel entrance is at 12 m and the exit opens at 25 m. A canyon runs northeast from the exit to a sandy bottom at 29 m. The return along the islet finishes between 5 and 10 m.
Is photography good at La Ferriola?
Yes. The tunnel offers good conditions for wide-angle backlit silhouette shots. Best lighting is at midday when sunlight enters both tunnel mouths simultaneously. The lobsters on the sandy canyon floor and the red coral on the walls are good subjects for macro and close-focus wide-angle work.
How far is La Ferriola from L'Estartit?
Approximately 25 minutes by boat. It is further than the Medes islands (10-15 minutes) but sits on the Montgrí coast within the same natural park. All L'Estartit dive centres include it in their regular site rotation.
