About

C/ Platja 8 sits a short walk from the port in L'Estartit. Unisub has been there since 1965, which makes it the oldest dive operation on this stretch of the Costa Brava. Tony Murray founded it. Sean runs it now, with a crew that reviewers call out by name: Roig and Bruce on instruction, Willy on the boat.

The operation is built for throughput. Two boats run up to four trips a day during peak season, covering both the Illes Medes marine reserve and the Montgrí coast. The Tritón alone carries 48 divers. That scale comes with infrastructure most smaller centres lack: three air compressors, a Nitrox station, a repair shop for regulators and BCDs, and a restaurant with a terrace facing the Medes Islands.

Courses run the full PADI range from try dives through Divemaster, plus specialties including Adaptive Support Diver and GROUPER. The equipment fleet is Cressi. Seven languages are spoken. For divers planning a week-long stay, the volume pricing structure is the clearest draw: a 12-dive pack brings the per-dive cost below 35 EUR, about half the single-dive rate.

What Divers Say

Repeat visitors set the tone. Reviewers describe a family atmosphere and name individual staff members across multiple years of visits. Instructors Roig and Bruce draw specific praise for course delivery. Boat master Willy gets mentioned for keeping things relaxed on deck.

Beginners report a patient, one-to-one approach that put nervous first-timers at ease. Multilingual capability matters here: French-speaking staff handle Francophone clients, and the centre operates in seven languages overall.

The volume pricing earns appreciation from divers staying more than a few days. A handful of reviews note that snorkelling trips felt shorter than expected, with less than 45 minutes of actual water time. Visibility at the Medes Islands varies by day and season, which some visitors found disappointing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many dive sites does Unisub cover?
Unisub runs trips to 19 named sites across the Illes Medes marine reserve and the Montgrí Coast. The Medes sites include Carall Bernat, Dofi Nord, La Vaca, and El Medallot. On the mainland coast, sites like La Pedrosa, El Rossinyol, and Cap Castell offer a different character. Few centres in L'Estartit list this many sites by name.
Do I need a guide to dive with Unisub?
If you hold Advanced Open Water or above and have at least 50 logged dives, you can dive without a guide. Everyone else must book a guided dive. At Medes Islands, that changes the price from 59.30 EUR to 71.30 EUR per dive. The guide requirement applies per dive, not per package.
How do the multi-dive packages work?
Packs combine Montgrí coast and Medes Islands dives in equal numbers. A 2-dive pack (1+1) costs 84 EUR, while a 12-dive pack (6+6) costs 419 EUR. The per-dive price drops from about 49 EUR to 35 EUR as the pack grows. Packs do not need to be used in a single day.
What is the boat like at Unisub?
Two boats. The Tritón is a 16-metre fiberglass vessel carrying up to 48 divers with onboard showers. It was originally a glass-bottom tourist boat converted for diving. The Paraguay II is an 11-metre wooden boat for 28 divers. Both have specialized exit ladders for divers wearing fins.
Is Unisub suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. The Try Dive (Discover Scuba Diving) programme starts at the centre with a briefing, then heads out by boat. Prices range from 78 EUR for a Montgrí coast dive to 102 EUR with a GoPro add-on. Reviewers mention one-to-one instruction and a calm approach that helped nervous first-timers.
What environmental certifications does Unisub hold?
Five: PADI Eco Center, ISO 14001, Biosphere Certified Tourism, Green Fins partnership, and DAN Europe membership. The centre is one of the most credentialed operators in the Illes Medes area for environmental standards.
Does Unisub offer accommodation packages?
The centre partners with four local properties: Marina and Nautic apartments, Hotel Medes II (3-star), and Hotel Coral Boutique (4-star). Packages combine accommodation with 10 dives. Pricing requires direct contact with the centre.
