About

Meridiano Cero is a francophone, owner-run dive centre on Calle La Orchilla in La Restinga, the dive hub at the southern tip of El Hierro. Celine, from Brittany, and Claude, from Belgium, are the working couple behind it; David, a Parisian instructor, joins them often. The centre's About page describes the operation as "a small, family-style structure" that traces back to one of the first dive shops on the island, originally started by a fisherman.

Three certifying bodies stand behind the courses: FFESSM, SSI, and PADI. That triple-track is what allows the centre to run the full French federal lineup from N1 through Moniteur Federal alongside Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, Divemaster, and SSI Deep specialty. Photography and Nitrox specialties round out the catalogue. Boat dives launch by zodiac directly from La Restinga harbour, with the reserve's signature sites within fifteen minutes' steam.

The eco-orientation is explicit and stacked: Label ECOSUB, Centre Longitude 181, and Blue Oceans certifications, plus active data contributions to REDPROMAR, the Manta Catalog, and the Angel Shark Project Canary Islands. The voluntary six-diver cap is framed as a conservation choice as much as a comfort one. The centre does not accept HANDI divers, citing the volcanic-island access conditions.

What Divers Say

Across 258 TripAdvisor reviews at 5.0/5 and 92 Google ratings at 4.9/5, the praise pattern is unusually consistent. Celine and Claude are remembered by name in both French and English reviews, with words like "rigorous", "perfect briefings", and "small committee" recurring across years. Repeat visits show up often, and reviewers single out the off-season cooperation with neighbouring Arrecifal as a planning reassurance.

Family diving features in several 2025 entries, including one twelve-year-old who reportedly preferred the dive day to skiing. Photography support and FFESSM Level-2 completions also recur. The constructive notes cluster on a single axis: a small number of Spanish-speaking divers have found the working culture French-default rather than Spanish-default. One Google 2/5 review from 2020 frames Celine as strict and language-tilted; the same reviewer says the rest of the group was fine. The volume is small against several hundred top-tier ratings, but the language fit is worth knowing in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What languages does Meridiano Cero operate in?
French is the working language and the centre's clientele is predominantly francophone. Celine and Claude also work in English and Spanish, and reviews in all three languages report smooth communication. A small minority of Spanish-speaking visitors have noted the French-default culture as a fit consideration rather than a service issue.
How many divers per boat at Meridiano Cero?
Six individual divers, or eight for a booked group, on one zodiac per dive site. The marine reserve allows up to twelve per buoy, so the centre voluntarily caps tighter than regulation. Reviewers consistently describe the result as feeling like a private charter.
Can I get FFESSM certification here?
Yes. Meridiano Cero is registered with FFESSM (SCIA 2301030C) and runs the full federal track from N1 through Moniteur Federal instructor training (550 EUR). Federal-level training is uncommon in the Canary Islands, where most centres are PADI or SSI only.
Is Meridiano Cero family-friendly?
Yes. Multiple 2025 reviews describe diving with children, including a confirmed 12-year-old. The six-diver cap and personalised briefings work well for family groups, though El Hierro's volcanic terrain and reef-zone depths are best matched to certified family members rather than first-time children.
Does the centre arrange accommodation?
Yes. Coordination of accommodation and on-island transport is offered free of charge as part of the booking. There are no hotels in La Restinga due to UNESCO biosphere restrictions, so options are apartments via Booking, Airbnb, or arranged through the centre.
What eco-certifications does Meridiano Cero hold?
Three: Label ECOSUB (FFESSM's eco-responsible programme), Centre Longitude 181, and Blue Oceans. The centre also contributes data to REDPROMAR observations, the Manta Catalog photo-ID network, and the Angel Shark Project Canary Islands. An animal-welfare guideline badge from a major review platform is a separate endorsement.
When is the best time of year to dive with Meridiano Cero?
Year-round. Mar de las Calmas is sheltered from the trade winds, with water between 20 and 25 degrees. When the Alisios blow, dives stay inside the reserve; on calm windows the centre adds east-coast outside-reserve sites such as Baja Bocarones. Direct booking is recommended in any season.
