Es Caracol

Offshore reef 1km from Menorca's SE coast with grottos, chimneys, and arches. Historic wreck remnants, prolific reef fish, OW accessible.

The dive

At 1km from shore, the reef breaks near the surface in any swell — a navigational hazard that has claimed ships over the centuries. Underwater, the structure descends from near-surface to 21 metres of rocky bottom, riddled with grottos, chimneys, and arches. Work the outer perimeter first to get the layout, then duck into the larger openings as you find them. The spaces between the main reef and surrounding boulders concentrate crustaceans and smaller species. Cross to the west side to find where old wreck material sits among the rocks: scattered evidence of several historical ships, not an intact wreck, but the kind of detail that rewards a slow, attentive circuit. Fish density is high throughout — groupers hold position near the structure, barracuda range in the open water above, and moray eels occupy almost every crevice of note.

What makes it special

Es Caragol is the reef in a dive catalog full of caves. The neighbouring SE coast sites require overhead-environment experience; this is open on all sides, with blue water in every direction. The 1km offshore position creates a sense of genuine exploration: a rocky island structure circumnavigated slowly, multiple routes around and through it, no ceiling overhead. For groups where certifications vary, the site works for everyone at the same depth and in the same water. The wreck remnants add a historical dimension without turning this into a wreck dive. The fish density is immediate without requiring any particular depth.

Know before you go

A torch improves the experience in the darker grottos and chimneys — exits stay visible throughout, but the crevices have their own light conditions. Ask the guide about the wreck material on the west side before the dive; it's easy to pass without noticing. As an exposed offshore reef, the site cancels in rough swell conditions. Confirm with your operator whether a reserve permit applies at this location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Es Caragol inside a marine reserve?
The reef lies in or near the Reserva Marina de la Illa de l'Aire. Confirm the current permit situation with your dive center before booking — some operators handle this as part of their service.
What will I see at Es Caragol?
The reef is known for dense fish life: groupers, barracuda, moray eels, and scorpionfish throughout the structure. The grottos and chimneys add variety to a fish-rich reef dive. West-side wreck remnants are present but not an intact wreck.
Can Open Water divers dive Es Caragol?
Yes. The reef peaks at 16-21m and is accessible from OW level with a guide. Boat-only access and the offshore position make a guide practical regardless of certification level.
Are the wrecks at Es Caragol diveable as a wreck dive?
Not as a dedicated wreck dive. The west side holds scattered historical material from several ships, but nothing intact. Mention it in your pre-dive briefing if you want the guide to point it out.
When is the best time to dive Es Caragol?
May through October for the best water temperature and visibility. Summer brings warmer surface conditions; below the thermocline at 15m, water stays cool year-round.
