About

Werner Lau runs the dive centre at Medhufushi Island Resort, the only strong resort-based dive operation working Meemu Atoll - one of the Maldives' least dive-touristed regions. Both SSI and PADI tracks are taught side by side, from Open Water through Advanced, with nitrox free of charge for certified divers across every Werner Lau centre. Diving is sold as single dives or as 6-dive, 10-dive and 6-consecutive-day unlimited packages, and every package opens with an accompanied acclimatisation dive on the house reef; the unlimited package folds in house-reef night dives and early-morning dives too. The real business, though, happens in the boat channels. A decade-plus blog archive kept by the Medhufushi team logs tiger, bull and whale shark encounters at Boahura Express, and names Mantas and More, Sharks Tongue and a manta cleaning station called Valley of the Ray among the channels worked regularly. Medhufushi Tila, the reef immediately offshore and the resort's namesake, is widely reported by dive-travel sources as Meemu Atoll's best-known and most-dived site, though it is not currently named on the centre's own live pages. For divers who want shark and manta encounters without the crowds of the central Maldives, Werner Lau Medhufushi is Meemu Atoll's default choice.

What Divers Say

Divers consistently frame Meemu Atoll, through this centre, as an under-visited alternative to the busier central Maldives - a place to expect reliable shark and manta encounters delivered by a small, close-knit instructor team rather than crowded dive sites. Reviewers highlight the variety of named channels and the near-weekly sighting reports the team posts on its own blog, which reinforces guest accounts of frequent "shark surprises" on the boat dives. Recent feedback confirms the Werner Lau brand's continuity at the resort. Constructive notes are limited in volume, but the overall pattern favors divers who value channel variety and a lighter-traffic atoll over a long list of named house-reef highlights.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Medhufushi?
A roughly 45-minute seaplane flight or a 2.5-hour speedboat journey from Male, since the island sits about 130km from the capital, in Meemu Atoll.
Is nitrox included?
Yes, free of charge for certified divers, brand-wide across all Werner Lau Diving Centers.
What certifications are offered?
Both SSI (Open Water Diver, Advanced Adventurer) and PADI (Open Water, Advanced Open Water) tracks, plus SSI/PADI specialty and nitrox courses.
What's the house reef used for?
Every package's first dive is an accompanied acclimatisation dive on the house reef. The 6-day unlimited package also includes house-reef night dives and early-morning dives.
House reef or boat day trips?
Both, but the boat channels are the real draw. The house reef mainly opens and closes each package, while the shark- and manta-rich channels - Boahura Express, Mantas and More, Sharks Tongue and Medhufushi Tila - are reached by boat.
What package options exist?
Single dives, 6-dive and 10-dive packages, or 6-consecutive-day unlimited diving. Boat trips cost extra if not pre-booked as part of a package.
