Los Silos

From the beach at Puertito de los Silos, the terrain settles quickly into a mix of volcanic rock and open grass fields, easy going for divers who want a relaxed profile without much current to manage. A short tunnel, about 10 metres long, cuts through one of the rock formations partway through the dive, enough of a change in pace to break up the reef without asking for technical skills. Stingrays and barracuda work the open ground, and cuttlefish and octopus turn up along the rock edges.

Los Silos doesn't try to be the headline dive of this stretch of coast, and that's part of its value. It sits between Garachico's advanced lava tunnel and Punta de Teno's scenic shore dive, offering an easier, shore-accessible middle ground. The area is also one of the last strongholds for angel sharks in the Canary Islands, a critically endangered species that turns up here more often in winter.

A torch is worth carrying for the tunnel section, though it's short enough to manage without one in a pinch. Standard reef-diving gear applies: mask, fins, wetsuit and a dive computer. If you're diving over winter and hoping for an angel shark, give it space and let it move on its own terms rather than closing the distance.
