About
The centre states plainly, on its own history page, that the Haliotis project itself began here, in Peniche, a claim unique to this branch among the company's pages captured this wave, not the wider brand's shared story repeated at every location. This base runs from Casal da Ponte on the edge of Atouguia da Baleia, about five minutes by van from the Peniche harbour departure point. It holds PADI 5 Star CDC status and trains through TecRec, Freediving, Snorkelling and First Aid/EFR alongside the standard recreational ladder, up to Instructor Development.
Two own RIBs, Lascaris and Necora, cover the Berlengas crossing, a trip the centre's own pages time differently depending on which one you read: about 25 minutes on one, closer to half an hour on the other, not reconciled. From there, three areas of differing character open up: sheltered bays, shipwrecks and small caves near Berlenga Grande for easier dives, the outer Estelas, and the more exposed Farilhões, where the centre says the marine life runs richest and the conditions hardest. Water sits at 16-20°C in the June-October high season, calling for a 7 mm wetsuit; the November-May low season runs closer to 15°C and a semi-dry or dry suit, with December-February trips infrequent for weather.
On land, the base runs two classrooms, changing rooms for 60, two training pools, and a technical and retail area stocking major dive-gear brands. A BAUER compressor fills air, nitrox, trimix and oxygen for over 100 cylinders, and the centre calls itself rebreather-friendly.
Sixteen named staff run the base, led by manager and PADI Course Director Pedro Oliveira and base leader Bruno Ribeiro. Nine list marine biology as academic training alongside their PADI and skipper credentials, a pattern among the guides who brief and lead the boat.
What divers say
The same names turn up again and again across accounts written months apart: manager Bruno, technical director and skipper Capitão José, and instructors including Bruna Martins, Inês, Rita, Beatriz and Constança, most often praised for patience and calm guiding with nervous or first-time divers. One review describes a dedicated instructor for each of two nervous teenagers on a family trip, and calls the day the holiday's highlight; another describes Capitão José as the kind of skipper worth trusting at sea. Octopus, plaice and starfish sightings come up repeatedly too. Independent diving-forum mentions going back to 2010 add the same picture, consistently professional and, in one case, singled out for running trips daily through summer when the rest of the Portuguese market kept to weekends. No separate complaint pattern turns up alongside any of this.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does PADI 5 Star CDC mean for this branch?▾
Career Development Center is PADI's top affiliation tier, awarded for running the full training ladder from entry-level courses through instructor development on site. This Peniche branch carries that rating on its own PADI directory listing, independently of the wider Haliotis brand, and its course catalogue backs it up: PADI Scuba Diving, TecRec, Freediving, Snorkelling and an Instructor Development Course all run from this base.
Did the Haliotis diving brand actually start in Peniche?▾
The branch's own history page credits Peniche as the project's actual starting point, before the brand grew into five more Portuguese branches plus one in Cabo Verde, all sharing the same company-wide story. Only this location's own page makes that specific claim about itself.
Does Haliotis Peniche run boat trips every day in summer?▾
Divers have reported this as a point of difference for years: one account from 2013 describes Haliotis running two-tank trips out to the Berlengas every day through summer, when most other Portuguese operators kept to weekend-only schedules. The centre's own site still frames June to October as its high season, with December to February trips infrequent because of weather.
Which parts of the Berlengas archipelago does Haliotis Peniche dive?▾
Three areas, by the centre's own description. Berlenga, the main island, holds the sheltered bays, shipwrecks and small caves suited to easier dives. Estelas sits further out. Farilhões, the outermost group, carries the most exposure to wind, current and swell, and is also described as where the richest marine life turns up, a trade-off between difficulty and reward that runs through all three.
Do the guides have a marine-biology background?▾
Several do. Of the sixteen staff named on the branch's own team page, nine list marine biology as their academic training, on top of the usual PADI instructor, skipper and Divemaster credentials, a pattern not every dive base can claim.
