About

Slow Diving La Herradura is the project that Iñaki and Celia built deliberately, after more than a decade of professional diving in La Herradura, waiting for the right moment and the right name. The name is literal. Their approach is slower, more intentional diving: extended time at depth for observation, detailed pre-dive marine education briefings, and zero-impact interaction with the protected environments where they operate.

Both instructors hold dual PADI-SSI Open Water Scuba Instructor credentials. Iñaki's background spans Coastal Patrol Officer, Port Authority Officer, Maritime Bridge Officer, Yacht Captain, and Professional Diver, with specialty instructor qualifications in night diving, deep, drift, nitrox, and buoyancy — and training in subaquatic archaeology and water rescue. Celia is a Port Authority Officer and Recreation Vessel Captain, specialising in dry suit, nitrox, and buoyancy instruction; she is also the team's underwater photographer.

Their semi-rigid "Cheyet" (a Cobra 799 with a deep V-hull and tall bottle rack) departs from Marina del Este, one of Andalusia's most scenic sports harbors. A minibus runs divers and gear from the Calle Real shop to the boat. The center holds Active Tourism License AT/GR/00362, which is the Junta de Andalucía authorization required to operate in the Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park — access that unlocks the dramatic cliff coastline between La Herradura and Nerja.

Equipment comes through partner Ocean Turtle Tropical, co-located at the shop and the only ScubaPro stockist in La Herradura. All rental gear — cylinders, compressor, wetsuit, BCD, regulator — is new.

What Divers Say

Iñaki and Celia appear by name in every published review. The center is small and personal, and the feedback reflects that directly. A UK solo diver called them "the best skippers I have ever dived with" and described the underwater life along the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs as on par with the Red Sea — octopus, cuttlefish, beds of tube worms. A Spanish reviewer likened the briefings to an art form: "precision and enthusiasm... you do not tire of listening."

Two themes carry through all five reviews without exception. The first is the briefings, which multiple reviewers single out as unusually thorough, security-conveying, and delivered with genuine passion. The second is the gear: three reviewers specifically note that the shop looks and feels like new equipment throughout. The review count is still small, consistent with a center that opened in mid-2024 and prioritizes depth of experience over throughput. The consistency across all five is the signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 'slow diving' approach mean in practice?
It means the pacing is deliberate — longer bottom times at shallower depths, unhurried observation, and no rushing between sites. Iñaki and Celia built the methodology around marine education and low-impact interaction. Reviewers describe the briefings as unusually thorough and delivered with genuine enthusiasm, and the dives themselves as guided observation sessions rather than checkpoints.
What dive sites does Slow Diving La Herradura visit?
The center operates at sites in two protected zones: the ZEC Punta de la Mona inside the bay (including Cueva del Jarro, Piedras Altas, and Piedra del Hombre) and the Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park east toward Nerja (La Huerta, Pecio Los Candelabros, La Calita). All sites are within 30 minutes by boat from Marina del Este.
Does Slow Diving La Herradura provide equipment rental?
Yes. Full rental includes wetsuit, mask, fins, boots, BCD, and regulator — all brand-new ScubaPro gear sourced through partner Ocean Turtle Tropical, which is the only ScubaPro stockist in La Herradura. Nitrox fills are also available.
How do I get to the center and the boat?
The shop is at C/ Real, 16 in La Herradura village. A minibus transfer from the shop to the boat at Marina del Este is included in the dive price. Malaga airport is about 80 km (75 minutes), Granada roughly 70 km (50 minutes) by car.
What certifications and courses are available?
The SSI ladder runs from Discover Scuba through Open Water, Advanced, Rescue with EFR, and Divemaster. Specialty courses cover deep diving, currents, nitrox, buoyancy, dry suit, and night diving — both instructors hold instructor credentials for their respective specialties. Open Water courses run every week.
Is the center suitable for beginners and first-time divers?
Yes. Discovery dives (Bautizo) run as single or double dives from 70 EUR. Both instructors have first-aid instructor credentials and extensive maritime backgrounds, and every reviewer who mentions first-time diving notes feeling safe from the start of the briefing.
When is the best time to dive La Herradura with Slow Diving?
The center operates year-round. Summer months bring warmer water and calmer conditions along the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs. Winter and spring diving remains possible but call ahead from December to March when schedules may be reduced. The ZEC Punta de la Mona sites inside the horseshoe bay dive well throughout the year.
