South Ari Dive Center

South Ari Dive Center has run from the same guesthouse base on Dhangethi Island since 2016, when it opened as the island's first PADI 5-Star operation. A single 50-foot boat carries up to 25 divers out on daily trips, though the dive groups themselves stay small: personalised itineraries are capped at three divers per guide.

The house rotation covers Broken Rock, a canyon-split reef with a resident Napoleon wrasse, turtles and scorpionfish, twenty minutes out from the jetty, and Kudarah Thila, a pinnacle whose overhangs are lined in yellow daisy coral and gorgonian fans, fifteen to twenty-five minutes out depending on the account. The atoll's channels run exposed and currents can build quickly, so confirm the certification a given site needs before booking.

A third regular stop is the Kudhimaa wreck off Machchafushi, a fifty-metre cargo ship that sank in 1998 and now lies around thirty metres down, with nurse sharks, batfish, stonefish and moray eels working the hull. Further out, the whale shark and manta channel along the protected reef toward Dhigurah is the headline trip, though sightings depend on season and luck, never assured. Divers wanting shark diving specifically can add the centre's second base, Fuvahmulah Central Dive Center, a larger operation on a different island with its own draw.

Guests typically stay at the centre's own Seaside Dhangethi Inn by the jetty and book nights, meals and dives as one package. That suits a diver settling in for a few days on Dhangethi more than one shopping a single boat trip.

Reviews consistently credit the crew's local knowledge for turning up whale sharks and mantas even though the centre's own boat runs slower than the speedboats some rival operators use for the same chase; divers say the guides make up the difference by reading the channel well. A handful of 2026 reviews mention mid-trip hiccups: gear missing from an equipment box on one outing, a cancelled excursion put down to planning on another, both resolved or refunded during the stay.
