Arriefes

Also known as: Arrifes

A boat-access rocky drop-off off Praia dos Arrifes, Albufeira, 8-16m deep, where octopus, moray, seabream and cuttlefish shelter among broken rocks.

The dive

Arriefes lies in broken pieces on the seabed off Albufeira: a line of isolated rocks and a larger block, with holes and crevices running between them, at eight to sixteen metres. A boat out of Albufeira drops divers straight over the rocks; the wooden steps down to Praia dos Arrifes beach above lead only to a snorkelling spot, not to this reef. There is no set route through the pieces, just a slow drift from one gap to the next, reading what shelter each one holds: octopus tucked into a pocket, a moray at the lip of a crevice, seabream working the water above the block, a cuttlefish holding still against the rock. Smaller holes between the broken pieces keep crabs and shrimp too small to name without a closer look. The reef runs as one long, unhurried walk through rock, and a single tank covers the whole eight to sixteen metre band without effort.

What makes it special

Arriefes' colour only shows once a diver stops swimming and starts looking: the reef reads as plain grey-brown rock under ambient light, but a lantern worked into the cracks turns up reds and mottled skin that would otherwise stay hidden. Octopus, moray, seabream and cuttlefish all use the same shadowed gaps between the broken rocks, so working one crevice at a time with a light in hand pays off better here than covering ground.

Know before you go

A boat trip out of Albufeira gets divers to this reef. No operator's own page names Arriefes as a fixed stop on its schedule, so it is worth checking with an Albufeira dive centre that this exact site is on the day's plan before booking. No certification beyond the general Portuguese diving-licence requirement is named for this reef specifically, and the depth stays well inside Open Water limits throughout. A lantern is worth carrying: the rock's colour and crevice life show best with one.

Why Dive Arriefes

What makes this dive site stand out.

  1. Broken-rock drop-off, 8-16m

Isolated rocks and a main block riddled with holes make a shallow, unhurried reef

  2. Octopus and moray shelter

Seabream and cuttlefish share the same crevices, crustaceans in the smaller gaps

  3. Boat-only from Albufeira

The clifftop steps above reach the beach for snorkelling, not this dive

  4. Photography-friendly

A lantern picks out colour in the cracks that ambient light leaves flat

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does one Albufeira diving list put Arriefes right after a separate site called 'Alien Head Reef'?▾

Because they are two separate named reefs, not one site under two names. The list gives each its own line and its own depth: ten to twelve metres for Alien Head Reef, eight to sixteen for Arriefes.

Why does a separate dive-spot listing for 'Arrifes-Claire' show different coordinates from this reef?▾

Because it is most likely a different site. Arrifes-Claire sits about 3.2 kilometres east of Arriefes, with its own depth range, nine to fourteen metres against Arriefes' eight to sixteen. It reads as a different stop, possibly a two-site boat route sharing a name, not a second listing for this reef.

Is 'Arriefes' a misspelling of 'Arrifes'?▾

Likely: 'Arriefes' reads as a probable misspelling of 'Arrifes', the Portuguese word for reefs. This page uses the current listing name, Arriefes; a diver searching under either spelling is looking for the same reef.
