Barrocas de Fora
A 200x100m boulder reef off Vilamoura in the Algarve, 12-16m deep, its cracks and holes packed with seabream, moray eels and octopus.

The dive
Barrocas de Fora is a boulder field roughly the size of a football pitch, 200 metres long and 100 metres wide, laid across the seabed off Vilamoura. The rock breaks into a maze of large blocks, and the maze itself, not open sand or a single wall line, is what gives the dive its shape: picking a line through the boulders means threading cracks and holes, not following one clean edge. Depth runs shallow, roughly 12 to 16 metres, keeping the whole dive above any Algarve summer thermocline. Seabream and grey triggerfish move along the outer face of the boulders in loose shoals, morays of several sizes sit tucked into the deeper cracks, and octopus and cuttlefish work the sandy gaps between blocks.
What makes it special
The draw here is density: enough boulders, packed close enough and riddled with enough holes, to concentrate life across a compact footprint that rewards working it slowly instead of swimming past it. It's a solid local dive built for that kind of close, methodical exploration, not a single headline feature, and it sits east of the Pedra do Valado marine park, whose protected reef cluster runs as far as Albufeira marina, so no permit or park fee applies here.
Know before you go
As an outer reef set slightly further from shore than the sheltered bays near Lagos and Sagres, Barrocas de Fora can pick up more exposure to open Atlantic current than a typical inshore Algarve dive. Treat this as a possibility to check on the day, not a fixed feature of the site, and ask your operator about conditions before you go in. Some Algarve dive guides link Open Waters, a Quarteira-based shop, to this reef, though whether it runs the dive as a dedicated trip isn't confirmed, so ask before booking. Bring the standard Algarve exposure protection: a 7mm wetsuit with hood, gloves and boots covers the water temperature at this depth across most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I plan Barrocas de Fora as a 14-metre dive or a 16-metre one?▾
Plan for the deeper figure. One operator's dive-spot page gives an average of 12 metres and a maximum of 16; the catalogue record used to seed this listing gives a flat maximum of 14. Neither has been checked against a primary dive log, so 16 metres is the safer planning ceiling.
Is Barrocas de Fora reached by boat or from the shore?▾
The catalogue listing that first flagged this site contradicts itself: its structured access field says boat, its auto-generated description text says shore. No operator guide or diver account resolves the contradiction, so confirm the entry method with whichever shop books your dive.
What's the difference between Barrocas de Fora and Barrocas de Terra?▾
They're two separate rock-reef formations in the same Faro-district cluster east of the Algarve's Sagres-to-Carvoeiro operator belt. Barrocas de Fora, 'outer rocks,' is the site on this page, off Vilamoura; Barrocas de Terra sits nearby under its own name, with no site-specific data gathered yet.
Why doesn't Barrocas de Fora show up in diver trip reports online?▾
It simply hasn't attracted them: two independent operator guides describe the reef itself, but no forum thread or trip report names it specifically, even though the same community channels regularly discuss other Algarve sites. Local shops treat it as a solid, workmanlike local reef, not a signature stop.
