Burgau

Also known as: Burgau Reef

A shallow, sheltered shore reef off Burgau beach in the western Algarve, a quiet beginner dive distinct from the Batelão do Burgau wreck about 200 m along the same beach.

The dive

Burgau is a shore entry directly off Burgau beach, a small bay in the western Algarve sheltered from the wind by the high terrain around it. The reef sits close in and stays shallow throughout, reported between 3 and 6 metres depending on the measurement. Divers work over natural rock reef the operator describes as beautifully overgrown, with fish, octopus and cuttlefish using the cracks and cover. No wall, cave or swim-through is reported here, just a low, sheltered reef close to the sand.

What makes it special

Burgau shares its beach with a second, separate dive: the Batelão do Burgau wreck, a sunken tugboat about 200 metres further along the sand. Blue Ocean Divers runs both, but they are two different dives, not one site under two names, so it is worth checking which of the two a shore or boat briefing actually means. Set against that neighbour, Burgau reef is the easier of the pair: sheltered, close to shore, low-profile, and advertised as a beginner dive, with no wreck to explore. What it offers is a short, calm reef swim over live rock close to the sand: an easy first dive, or a second dive on the same beach after the wreck, and not a name that turns up on any must-dive list for this coast.

Know before you go

Blue Ocean Divers, based in the Sagres/Lagos area, is the one confirmed operator running this shore dive. The reef is advertised as suitable for beginners and priced within standard guided-dive or course rates, not as a separate line item. No hazard is documented for this reef specifically; the wreck sharing this beach carries its own recorded boat-traffic caution, but nothing confirms whether that extends to this closer-in shore entry. No marine reserve or site-specific permit applies here; Burgau sits outside the Algarve's one documented protected zone, the Pedra do Valado park, which covers a separate cluster of sites further east. This entry's coordinates were seed-imported from a catalog; no diver or surveyor has confirmed them with an on-site GPS reading, so treat the position as approximate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Burgau reef the same dive as the wreck at Burgau?▾

No. Blue Ocean Divers runs both as two separate shore dives off the same beach, advertised individually as "Burgau reef" and "Wreck in Burgau" (the Batelão do Burgau tugboat). Reaching the wreck means swimming a further 200 metres along the same sand. They share a beach and an operator, not a dive.

How deep is the dive at Burgau?▾

There's no single figure. A catalog record used to seed the site puts the maximum at 3 metres; the local operator's own page gives 6 metres. No third source settles the difference, so both stand: plan around the shallower figure and treat 6 metres as the operator's own upper estimate.

What certification do I need to dive Burgau?▾

No source states a minimum. If you're training with Blue Ocean Divers, the course itself sets the bar for you; if you already hold a certification and are booking this dive independently, don't treat the beginner-friendly description as a published requirement, confirm directly with whoever is running the dive before you turn up.

Is Burgau inside a marine reserve, or does it need a permit?▾

No. Burgau sits outside the Algarve's one documented protected zone, the Pedra do Valado marine park, which covers a separate group of sites further east. No dive-specific permit or fee applies here.

What will I see diving Burgau reef?▾

The operator describes an overgrown reef with fish, octopus and cuttlefish. That's the extent of what's documented for this specific site; no season or species detail beyond those three groups has been reported.

Is Burgau a well-known Algarve dive site?▾

Not especially. It doesn't turn up in general "best dive spots" write-ups for the region, and no first-person diver account names it specifically online; what is documented for it comes from the operator that runs it.
