Santa Maria's closest dive, 200m off Vila do Porto marina: a 12-18m cave of nudibranchs and shrimp beneath schooling jacks and barracuda.
Last updated September 2026
The circuit works the north side of a low islet 200 metres off Vila do Porto, dropping onto lava and rock that average 12 metres and reach a stated maximum of 18. Currents here run weak, and the dive stays close to the rock rather than opening into blue water. Almaco jacks, yellowmouth barracuda and white trevally school over that same north side, the same three species named consistently by the island's operators and its own tourism board. The signature stop sits at the shallow end of the circuit: a cave cut into the rock where nudibranchs line the entrance walls and narwal shrimp hang in clusters from the ceiling. Mantamaria and Haliotis both run trips here from Vila do Porto, the shortest boat crossing to any site the island's operators dive.
A shallow, lit cave built into the islet's north side is what earns Ilhéu da Vila its "All Divers" rating: the official directory markets it explicitly for diving baptism, snorkelling and night diving, with the weak current and 12-18 metre depth band supporting every one of those uses. No deep platform, no long open-ocean crossing: the whole dive stays inside entry-level limits. That combination makes it the fallback when weather rules out a longer trip, and the natural first dive for anyone new to Santa Maria, certified or not. The islet itself carries formal protection too: it is registered as one of Santa Maria Natural Park's two Nature Reserves, established in 2008.
The north-side cave is built for a macro lens: nudibranchs on the walls and narwal shrimp clustered thickly enough on the ceiling to fill a frame, with enough natural light through most of the day to shoot without heavy strobes. Outside the cave mouth the same dive turns wide-angle, with jack and barracuda schools moving through the water close to the rock. The official directory lists underwater photography among the site's specific uses, alongside night diving: two different lenses on one short dive.
The cave stays shallow and naturally lit throughout, with the exit visible from inside at every point: this is an open swim-through built for a diving baptism, not a sealed overhead environment, and it asks nothing beyond entry-level certification. Currents run weak and the whole site sits within 18 metres. That keeps it a low-effort option for a short window or a check-out dive before something bigger. Bring a torch for the cave's real colour: without one, the nudibranchs and shrimp fade to silhouette against the available light.

No specialty certification is required. Despite the name, the site's cave is the area's baptism and night-dive venue: shallow, naturally lit and rated for all divers, including people diving for the first time. It asks nothing beyond the entry-level certification the rest of the site does.
Unconfirmed. One operator's own site lists a nearby 'Secret Cave', reachable only in calm seas, with yellowfin jacks and stingrays. No source states it is Ilhéu da Vila, and the species listed for it differ from this site's corroborated profile: Almaco jacks, barracuda, white trevally, nudibranchs and narwal shrimp. Treat the two as separate, unconfirmed listings until an operator says otherwise.
No, and the names are easy to mix up online. Ilhéu da Vila is this small islet 200 metres off Vila do Porto on Santa Maria, the site this page describes. Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo is a separate islet and dive site off São Miguel, a different island in the archipelago, with its own nature reserve. Check which island a source names before booking.
