About

Haliotis Santa Maria is the island branch of a six-centre Portuguese PADI Career Development Centre chain, alongside sister branches in Peniche, Sesimbra, Madeira, Faial and Cabo Verde. The company was founded in 2004 and has certified more than 15,000 students across those centres; Haliotis calls itself the only PADI Career Development Centre in Portugal, PADI's highest classification for a training operation. The Santa Maria branch runs from inside Hotel Colombo in Vila do Porto, and reviewers repeatedly mention walking down to the boat in flip-flops, with no separate transport to arrange.

Diving runs by boat from Vila do Porto marina. The house-site roster spans easy, shallow reef and cave dives suited to a newly certified diver through to advanced-only offshore trips: the reserve run to Dollabarat and Formigas takes about two hours each way, and João Lopes runs 15 to 45 metres with current present throughout. Courses centre on an Advanced Open Water bundle paired with one specialty, DSMB, drift, enriched air or peak performance buoyancy, priced from EUR 539 to EUR 589; guided-dive, snorkelling and rental prices are quoted per booking on the centre's own trip pages.

What divers say

One account credits Clem, a divemaster, with pausing a dive to help fix an equalisation problem, a small vote of confidence in how the crew handles trouble. The same personal register comes up again and again: reviewers describe a single boatload trip with the same names turning up on repeat visits, not a rotating roster, and close encounters with mobula rays at Ambrósio are the detail most reviewers mention first.

One detailed critical account cites rental equipment that was not up to par and an aggressive triggerfish at one of the named sites, reportedly biting hard enough to draw blood. A separate account found phone and email contact slow before arriving, though the dive itself, once booked, was rated highly in both cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I dive with mobula rays at Ambrósio with Haliotis?▾

Yes. Ambrósio is one of Haliotis's named day-trip packages and its most consistently mentioned encounter across reviews. The centre also runs a standalone snorkelling version of the same trip for anyone not diving. Access to the site runs on a weekly table of 90-minute boat slots assigned to licensed operators, not an individual diver registration, so booking with an operator that holds a slot is what gets you there.

What certification do I need for Ilhéu da Vila with Haliotis?▾

Haliotis advertises Ilhéu da Vila as suitable for Open Water divers at a maximum depth of 25 metres, seven metres past the standard 18 metre Open Water certification limit. A newly certified diver booking this site should confirm with the centre beforehand what depth the group will actually reach.

Can I just walk in at Hotel Colombo to book on the day?▾

The centre is based inside the hotel, a short walk to the boat at Vila do Porto marina. At least one reviewer found remote contact by phone or email slow before a visit and had better luck arriving in person and asking directly; booking ahead through the website is still the safer route in peak season.

What's included in Haliotis's Advanced Open Water course bundles on Santa Maria?▾

Each bundle pairs the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course with one specialty: DSMB Diver, Drift Diver, Enriched Air Diver or Peak Performance Buoyancy, priced from EUR 539 to EUR 589 depending on the specialty chosen.

Is Haliotis Santa Maria suitable for a first-time or beginner diver?▾

For some sites, yes: Gruta Azul is Open Water-gated, running mostly 13 to 14 metres and no deeper than about 18 metres. The offshore trips to Dollabarat, Formigas and João Lopes go deeper with current and are gated to Advanced Open Water, so a first booking is steered toward the shallower inshore sites.

When does Haliotis Santa Maria's dive season run, and why?▾

June to October. The centre does not run trips through winter, autumn or early spring, when the season turns against boat diving around the island.
