João Lopes
Also known as: Banco João Lopes, Cabeço de João Lopes, João Lopes Bank
North-coast volcanic bank off Santa Maria, Azores: a 14-15m reef top dropping to a 40-45m base, current-swept and rated Advanced Open Water.
Last updated September 2026
The dive
A volcanic reef rises off Santa Maria's north coast, about a nautical mile northwest of Anjos, reached by a thirty-minute boat run from Vila do Porto marina; access is boat-only, with no shore entry. The reef top sits at 14 to 15 metres, with a resting platform near 20 metres partway down a profile that keeps dropping to a base the tourism board puts at 40 metres; one operator's own page states 45. The whole run, top to base, is one continuous dive, with current holding moderate to strong the entire way down. Dusky groupers work the rock alongside a resident barracuda school, with salema and Almaco jacks lower on the bank.
What makes it special
Steep slopes and vertical rock faces put João Lopes in the official tourism board's deep and coastal-reef categories. Manta and devil ray sightings do reach this far out, and the operator that reports them is candid about why: proximity to Baixa do Ambrósio draws the rays here, not a population resident on this bank.
Know before you go
Only two of the area's three confirmed operators, Mantamaria and Haliotis, run trips here. Both frame the whole profile the same way: current-exposed from the moment you leave the surface, with nothing sheltered to retreat to if it builds. Come with the certification the deeper half of the route asks for; nothing shallower exists here if you need it.

Depth & Profile
Conditions & difficulty
Boat operations across the area run May-October.
The reef top already requires Advanced Open Water because of the current, not depth alone; no easier, shallower sub-route is described here. The full route to the base sits closer to Deep-certification territory.
Summary
Current holds moderate to strong for the entire dive, and there is no easier shallow circuit to fall back on.
Safety considerations
What can go wrong here, and what divers do about it. Conditions change - take the briefing from the operator on the day.
- Current: Moderate to strong current runs for the whole dive, not concentrated near the basePlan the dive as a guided drift and agree the current strategy with the boat crew before descending
- Depth: The base runs 40 to 45 metres depending on the listing, past the point where a shallow bail-out existsTreat the full route as Deep-certification territory and set a hard turnaround depth before the dive

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 'João Lopes' short for 'Banco João Lopes', or does the shorter name point somewhere else?▾
It is the same bank, not a different place. Both forms are genuinely in use. The full form, Banco João Lopes ('João Lopes Bank'), is the version most official and operator listings for this site carry. One operator's own trip listing instead uses the bare form, João Lopes. Neither form has replaced the other; both are in current use and both point to the same north-coast bank.
Is João Lopes covered by the same marine-reserve rules as Santa Maria's other regulated dive sites?▾
No, not under any of the instruments that schedule Santa Maria's other coastal sites. None of them, including Portaria 87/2014 and the Editais governing the marina, name João Lopes, so no permit, fee or fixed slot currently applies here today. That could change if a new instrument is issued or an existing one is found to cover it.
Why do manta and devil ray sightings happen at João Lopes if the resident population is elsewhere?▾
The operator that reports them ties the sightings to how close João Lopes sits to Baixa do Ambrósio, Santa Maria's manta hotspot, not to a population living on this bank. Expect an occasional pass, not the reliable aggregation Ambrósio itself is known for.
