Mġarr ix-Xini

A long, winding road drops from a farm track between Xewkija and Sannat straight to the water's edge, one of the more straightforward approaches to any Gozo dive. A steel catwalk covers the slipway in peak season; outside summer the same entry can be slippery underfoot. From there the seabed slopes gently through sand and boulders, threaded with Neptune grass, deepening in stages toward 17m where the bay opens south to open water and west into the Ta' Ċenċ inlet. Rocky walls run along both sides, holding two small caves at varying depths on the western side, each worth a look with a torch. The whole profile stays shallow and forgiving enough that one tank comfortably covers the bay, with time left over to work the walls, the caves and the seagrass in between.

This bay wins divers over with calm water and camera-friendly macro life, not depth or drama. A pipeline running out toward Comino, now grown over with marine life, threads through the middle of the bay and gives crustaceans somewhere to hide. The same residents come up again and again: flying gurnard and seahorses draw photographers here specifically, ahead of Gozo's bigger-name walls and wrecks. The site looks unremarkable from the surface, just a quiet inlet below a headland. That is deliberate. Everything worth seeing here is underwater, not around it.

Long before it became a dive site, this bay served as a small galley harbour under the Knights of Malta. A stone watchtower has stood on the headland above it since 1661, built to guard the inlet after Ottoman raiders used it to land during the 1551 attack on Gozo, when much of the population was carried into slavery.1 The tower is generally credited to the military engineer Mederico Blondel and paid for by Gozo's own community fund, one of only four such Knights-era watchtowers still standing on the island. It was restored in the 2000s and now opens to the public on select days. Centuries later the same sheltered water drew a film crew. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt shot scenes for the drama By the Sea here across several months in 2014, one of three Malta productions to feature Pitt.2 Divers making the trip down the valley road are, in effect, swimming through a location with four and a half centuries of documented use behind it, from a raid to a film set.

Seahorses and flying gurnard are the reason a camera belongs on this dive, both reliably found working the sand and seagrass rather than a passing reef circuit. Neither sits still for long, so patience earns more here than equipment does. Night dives turn up a different cast entirely, with crabs and cuttlefish becoming easier to approach once the light drops. A torch is worth carrying even by day, useful for picking nudibranchs out of the reef texture and for looking into the bay's two small caves.

Boats use this inlet to reach open water, so plan to stay at depth through the ascent rather than surfacing mid-channel. Night diving is a specific, repeated recommendation here, given the sheltered, shallow profile; expect large crabs and the occasional barracuda after dark. Independent divers should remember Malta's area-wide rule: anyone below AOW-equivalent certification needs a licensed instructor, though this bay's shallow depth range keeps most of it well inside comfortable limits regardless. Water shoes help on the mixed sand-and-rock shoreline outside the main summer season, when the catwalk over the slipway may not be in place.
