Pedra do Meio
A shallow reef of two flagstones by Sesimbra's harbour mouth, an easy 13-14m dive known for octopus, cuttlefish and squid laying eggs in its crevices.

The dive
Pedra do Meio sits a short boat ride from the exit of Sesimbra's harbour, built around two large flagstones running west to east. Follow the flagstones out and back and the navigation is done; the crevices and holes cut through the rock carry the interest. This is where local divers watch cephalopods at the very start of their lives: octopus, cuttlefish and squid lay eggs among the cracks, and hatchlings turn up if you know where to look. Conger eels and moray hold in the deeper gaps, and one report also notes triggerfish, wrasse and the odd scorpionfish on the same ground. Depth tops out around 13-14 metres, an easy single-tank dive that rarely pushes bottom time.
What makes it special
The draw here is timing: divers who slow down at the crevices catch octopus, cuttlefish and squid actually laying eggs, then can return weeks later for hatchlings working their way out. That sequence, visible up close and repeatable through the season, is why underwater photographers keep coming back with macro lenses, drawn by the cephalopod breeding activity in the reef's cracks. The shallow profile and simple two-flagstone layout put beginners in the same spot as the photographers, since no advanced buoyancy or navigation is needed to hold still at a crevice and watch.
Know before you go
The site sits inside the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park; organised groups need park authorisation, typically arranged through the dive operator. Boats use the harbour's exit channel directly overhead, so stay close to your group on the ascent and surface together, not scattered. One report notes Atlantic swell and surge can build here; time your entry and exit to the conditions. Old fishing gear occasionally snags on the reef, so keep kit trim and carry a cutting tool. Water runs cold in winter, so plan a drysuit outside the summer months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pedra do Meio the same site as Pedra da Mula?▾
No. Pedra do Meio is the shallow reef at the harbour mouth described here. Pedra da Mula is a separate site further along, near Ribeira do Cavalo beach, named for a rock shaped like a mule. General research summaries sometimes mix the two together, but Sesimbra operators and local listings treat them as distinct dives.
How cold is the water at Pedra do Meio?▾
Reports vary by source and year. One estimate puts the range at 16-20°C, while divers active in the wider Sesimbra area describe winters running as cold as 8°C. Plan for the colder end in winter and bring a drysuit; a semi-dry suit covers the summer months.
What's the best time of year to dive Pedra do Meio?▾
April to September brings the warmest water and generally settled conditions. Some divers rate January and February as the clearest months even though the water is colder then, and the site is diveable year-round.
Do I need a permit to dive Pedra do Meio?▾
Not one you arrange yourself. The site sits inside the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park, established in 1998, and organised groups need park authorisation. That's handled by the dive operator running the trip, with no separate fee found for divers.
Is Pedra do Meio good for beginners?▾
Yes. It's rated easy, tops out around 13-14m, and the navigation is a straightforward walk of two flagstones. Open Water certification is enough. The one thing to watch is boat traffic near the surface, since the site sits close to the harbour's exit channel.
