About Be Diving
Two divers, one guide. That is the ceiling this shop states for its Cozumel boat day, and the rest of the package sits behind that number: tanks, full dive equipment, transport from the shop to the boat, snacks, water and fruit on board, and a certified guide. Snorkellers can be booked onto the same trip, so a group where only half the party dives still goes out together.
Be Diving works two bases. San Miguel de Cozumel is the island one. A second shop in Playa del Carmen sells the mainland reef and the cenotes, which are days of their own and not island diving. Ferry tickets go onto a Cozumel booking as an extra, and multi day packages pair diving with accommodation at three levels, from a shared dorm to a boutique hotel.
Jonathan Ismail Mazzola founded the business and is an SSI Instructor Trainer. SSI rates the Cozumel facility as a Diamond Instructor Training Center, and the ladder runs from a one day Basic Diver program through Open Water, Advanced and Diver Stress and Rescue to Divemaster, Assistant Instructor and Instructor. A separate branch, Be Coral, teaches a one day coral identification course under two marine biologists, Karen Echeverría and Dra. Catalina Velasco. Spanish, English and Portuguese are all working languages.
What divers say
Patience is the theme divers keep returning to, and they describe it as deliberate. The accounts come from people who were nervous, or who had not dived in years, and what they credit is the time taken to refresh the basics before anyone got in the water. Guides get named, individually and often. They are credited with teaching and with spotting animals nobody else saw, and one is picked out in reviews written a year apart. The owner is named too, for putting a dive day together at short notice. Reef conservation comes up unprompted: one diver treats the shop's teaching on it as the reason to book, which lines up with the coral course. The one piece of friction reported is expectation setting, from a diver who felt the way Cozumel sites are shared out between operators had not been explained up front.

How many divers will share my guide?▾
Two, as a stated ceiling. It is the number attached to the Cozumel boat package, alongside tanks, full equipment, transport from the shop and a certified guide. Read it as an upper bound on how crowded your guide's group gets, not as a count of everyone on the boat.
Can someone in my group snorkel while the rest of us dive?▾
Yes. Snorkellers are booked onto the same trip as divers, which is how a family or a group of friends where not everyone is certified goes out together instead of splitting the day.
Can I dive Cozumel as a day trip from Playa del Carmen?▾
That is how much of the island business arrives. Be Diving works two bases, one in San Miguel de Cozumel and one in Playa del Carmen, and a ferry ticket can be bought alongside the dive day. Cenote diving and the mainland reef belong to the Playa del Carmen side, so plan those as separate days from island diving.
Can I ask for a particular dive site, like the C-53 wreck?▾
Name it at the time of booking, and do it early. Cozumel dive sites are allocated between operators, so the reefs any given boat works change from day to day and no shop can hold one for you in advance. A request made when the trip is being put together carries much further than one made on the dock.
What is the minimum age, and how well do I need to swim?▾
Ten is the minimum age for the Cozumel dive package. The other two requirements are being medically fit to dive and having basic swimming ability. That is the whole list for a first timer.
What does the coral course cover, and what does it cost?▾
A full day. Theory runs 08:00 to 11:00, an identification dive follows from 13:00 to 14:00, and the group meets again in the afternoon to go through what everyone saw. The syllabus covers coral types, the ecological role of reefs, the threats to them, identification by morphological group, telling a healthy colony from a diseased or dead one, and separating true corals from hydrocorals and sponges. It is taught by marine biologists and carries an SSI recognition. The price was 4,000 pesos in the first half of 2026, and it takes in the guides, full equipment rental, food and water through the day, a review guide and a Coral Discovery slate.
Which languages are courses taught in?▾
Spanish, English and Portuguese. All three are working languages here, across the recreational courses and the professional ladder through Divemaster, Assistant Instructor and Instructor.
