About Trippy Divers

Levels are not mixed here. Every certified-diver program runs with an instructor leading and three or four divers at most, so the people around you hold the card you hold. The rest of the operation is built around teaching. Trippy Divers holds SSI Instructor Training Center status, and the catalogue runs eleven programs. Try Scuba and Basic Diver put people with no certification in the water alongside an instructor. Scuba Diver and Open Water certify to 12 and 18 metres, the advanced programs cover buoyancy, navigation, night diving and depth work to 40 metres, and the professional line carries on through Divemaster, Open Water Instructor and instructor specialties.

Most of the diving is inside the Cozumel National Reef Park. A standard day is two boat dives on points the guide chooses that morning for the conditions and the level of the group. The C-53 Felipe Xicotencatl, a Mexican navy minesweeper scuttled off the island in June 2000, is sold with a reef dive on the same trip. Night dives are one tank, 45 to 60 minutes, no deeper than 12 metres.

The same business also works a second base at Puerto Morelos on the mainland, and that is how the cenote programs between Puerto Morelos and Tulum reach the catalogue, along with the mainland reef and Isla Mujeres. DAN, the SSS chamber network and Playa International Clinic are named medical partners.

What divers say

Teaching is what divers write about. Accounts describe arriving nervous, barely comfortable in the water, and finishing an Open Water certification anyway; one has a ten year old completing her certification dives. What gets praised is method: the site described in detail before anyone gets in, calm guiding with more than one route available under water, and pre-trip questions answered quickly enough that the booking was settled before anyone landed. Divers tend to name the instructor they had, and several say they went home planning the next course with the same person. From the mainland side of the business, one diver's account of a Puerto Morelos boat trip in early 2023 rated that boat wider and steadier than others working out of the port, dived it in a strong current, and recommended them afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I dive with Trippy Divers without a certification?

Two programs take uncertified people into the water with an instructor. Try Scuba is a first experience in shallow conditions with no classroom work attached; Basic Diver adds theory, confined water practice and one open water dive. Neither ends in a certification card. If you want the card, the Scuba Diver and Open Water courses start from the same place.

How far ahead do I have to book?

Forty-eight hours is the stated minimum, for a course and for a single dive day alike. Enquiries run through WhatsApp, phone or the contact form, in Spanish or English.

What is included in the price, and what is charged on top?

Tanks, full equipment including a dive computer, weights, transfers between the shop and the dive site, lunch, water and snacks aboard, and a stamped logbook sit inside every program. Charged separately are the national park entry fee, collected at the pier, hotel transfers, underwater photography and tips. Programs are quoted on request, so ask for the figure when you enquire.

Do I need dive accident insurance in Mexico?

Not by law. The centre recommends it anyway and sells day cover of up to 5,000 USD in medical expenses, medical evacuation included, which can be added to a booking. DAN and the SSS chamber network are among its named partners.

Do the cenote trips leave from Cozumel?

They run from the mainland. This is one business working two bases: the Cozumel shop, where its main activity sits, and a Puerto Morelos operation that reaches the cenotes between Puerto Morelos and Tulum, the mainland reef and Isla Mujeres. Treat a cenote day as a mainland day and plan it separately from island diving.

Is there an age limit, and do I have to be a strong swimmer?

No fixed limit in either direction. Every training program includes a short in-water fitness check alongside the standard medical questionnaire, and being comfortable in water counts for more than swimming well. Diving is not recommended during pregnancy.

What does the night dive involve?

One tank, 45 to 60 minutes, and a ceiling of 12 metres inside the reef park. The group meets at the shop at sunset for kit and a briefing on torch signals and night procedure, and every diver is issued a high-power torch. Certified divers only, Open Water and above, as with the other boat programs.
