About Charly-Sub

Charly-Sub is a PADI dive school in Pineda de Mar, at the point where the northern Maresme coast runs into the southern Costa Brava. It sits alongside the ROVISUB dive shop, one of the longest-established on this stretch of coast, and the two operate together. The centre frames itself less as a tourist desk and more as a family of divers: colleagues, friends and regulars who dive together for the fun of it.

In practice it works as a school and a club at once. The weekly rhythm is a group outing to different spots along the local coast and the southern Costa Brava, open to members and to new clients who can join the group. Training starts in a heated pool and an on-site classroom before moving to open water, with PADI instructors supported by divemasters on both pool and sea sessions. The course ladder runs from the try dive through Open Water, Advanced, Rescue and Divemaster up to the IDC instructor course, with specialties in Nitrox, dry suit and the underwater scooter.

Two things set the place apart. The first is the beginner focus. Much of the work is first dives, junior certifications for children, and patient instruction for people who arrive nervous. The second is reach beyond the local coast: the school runs international dive-travel weeks, with the Maldives and Red Sea the recurring destinations. Boat-based try dives open from mid-July.

What Divers Say

Charly-Sub holds a 5.0 Google rating across more than a hundred reviews and 4.9 on TripAdvisor. The reviews cluster tightly around first dives and entry-level courses, and one theme dominates: patient, reassuring instruction. Nervous first-timers and children come up again and again, put at ease by instructors whose names recur across write-ups. In-water photos and video are a regular part of the experience rather than an add-on.

A second theme is how smooth the whole thing feels end to end. Booking, equipment rental and the dive itself get described as easy, including by divers who do not speak Spanish and noted the team switching to English. The family-run character draws explicit praise. The visible review base skews heavily toward discovery dives and beginner courses rather than experienced-diver or technical feedback, so the picture is clearest for divers at the start of the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Charly-Sub a good place to try diving for the first time?
Yes. Most of the work here is entry-level instruction, and reviews repeatedly describe nervous first-timers, including children, being put at ease. The try dive starts at 70 EUR with video included, or 100 EUR from the boat once the boat season opens on 15 July. Junior Open Water certifications for children are available.
Where does Charly-Sub dive?
Outings rotate through dive spots along the northern Maresme coast and the southern Costa Brava, with sites near Blanes coming up regularly. There is no single fixed house reef. The product is a weekly group calendar rather than one home site, so where you dive depends on conditions and the week's plan.
Do I need to speak Spanish to dive with Charly-Sub?
No. Sessions run mainly in Spanish, but English-speaking divers report that instructors made the effort to communicate and brief in English. If you are booking from abroad, mention your language when you arrange the dive so the team can plan staffing.
What certifications can I do at Charly-Sub?
The full PADI ladder: try dive, Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue, Divemaster, and the IDC instructor course. Specialties include Nitrox, Dry Suit, and the underwater scooter (DPV). Emergency First Response with defibrillator training is also offered.
Can I join the club outings as a visitor, not just members?
Yes. The weekly outings draw a regular group of members, but new clients can slot into the group. The centre runs as a club and a school together rather than a high-volume tourist operation, so booking ahead helps the team fit you into the right outing.
Does Charly-Sub organize dive trips abroad?
Yes. Alongside the local calendar, the school organizes international dive-travel weeks, with the Maldives and Red Sea featured. These run separately from the regular Maresme and Costa Brava outings.
What facilities does Charly-Sub have for training?
A heated pool and an on-site classroom for confined-water and theory sessions before students move to open water. Changing rooms with showers and lockers are on site, and dive equipment is available through the associated ROVISUB shop on the premises.
