About
Hydronauts Diving Resort sits on the beach at Chalok Bay (Chalok Baan Kao), on Koh Tao's south coast, and its dive boat launches straight off the sand, with no pier crossing. It trains exclusively through RAID, framed as a deliberate alternative to PADI or SSI, and neither agency turns up anywhere in its course listings. Every course, from the first Open Water certification through Deep 40, Sidemount and Advanced Wreck, runs on backplate-and-wing kit from day one.
Fun diving runs two boat trips a day: an earlier one to the deeper, more current-exposed sites and a later one to easier ground, with groups capped at four divers per guide. A base on the island's south side lets the boat reach both the east and west coasts on the same day. Its catalogue names 28 dive sites around Koh Tao with depth and travel time from Chalok Bay, among them Southwest Pinnacle, put here at 6 to 30 metres (other operators give a shallower 5-metre top), and the offshore Sail Rock, ninety minutes out, whose place in Koh Tao's own roster or a neighbouring island's is unsettled.
Divemaster candidates train over eight weeks with three dedicated mentors, arriving with Deep 40, Nitrox, a current first-aid qualification and 45 logged dives before the programme starts. The eco-education in that programme runs through a partnership with Global Reef, a Koh Tao marine-conservation group. The beachfront property adds a training pool, classroom, cafe, restaurant and rooms, the last under a separate accommodation company.
What divers say
The same handful of themes repeat across the centre's reviews and an older community thread, three years apart and independent of each other. Small groups come up first, four divers to a guide, a figure one diver mentioned back in 2023, years before the operator's current course pages said the same thing. Rental gear draws specific praise, XDeep backplate-and-wing kit and Apeks regulators, described as in superb condition, and more than one reviewer names their guide directly, crediting patient teaching and a calm approach to safety. Several comparisons place this operator above larger, busier centres dived elsewhere in Southeast Asia, and one long-travelled diver called it simply the best they had used anywhere. No recurring complaint turns up across the reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Hydronauts teach PADI or SSI courses?▾
No. It trains exclusively through RAID, a choice its course pages frame as an alternative to PADI and SSI, and neither of those agencies appears anywhere in its offerings.
Can I join a fun dive here if I'm not RAID-certified?▾
Its fun-diving page asks only for an Open Water Diver certification or equivalent, plus a Scuba Refresher if it has been over 12 months since your last dive; it doesn't say whether a PADI or SSI Open Water card counts as that equivalent, so it's worth checking directly before you book.
What do I need to start Divemaster training here?▾
A minimum age of 18, a RAID Master Rescue Diver rating or its equivalent, Deep 40 and Nitrox certification, a current First Aid and Oxygen Provider qualification, and 45 logged dives before the eight-week programme begins.
Do I need my own dive insurance?▾
Yes, every diver needs valid cover to dive here. If you don't already have it, the centre can arrange it for 100 THB.
What are its opening hours?▾
Its own contact page and verified business listing both give 10:00 to 18:00 daily; a separate travel listing shows a longer 9am-to-7pm window, so it is worth confirming directly if you plan to arrive very early or dive late.
How big are the dive groups, and how many trips run a day?▾
Morning trips meet at 06:15 and leave at 06:45 for the deeper, more current-exposed sites, back around 11:00; the afternoon trip meets at 11:45 and leaves at 12:15 for easier ground, back around 17:00. Both run with no more than four divers per guide.
