Listen for them before you see them — drums and croakers produce a distinctive thumping sound using their swim bladders. In the Med, brown meagres gather in caves and overhangs where you can hear the chorus.

A large, dark bronze fish with a prominent chin barbel and golden-copper reflections. Distinguished from other dark reef fish by its robust body and big scales.

Hides in caves and under overhangs during the day, often in small groups — more active at dusk and dawn.
