Baixa do Ouro
A volcanic reef off Sao Miguel's south coast rising to 3m, diveable to 22-25m, boat-only from Ponta Delgada or Vila Franca do Campo.
Last updated September 2026
The dive
The reef breaks the surface at three metres off Sao Miguel's south coast, all volcanic rock, and the maximum depth recorded runs from 22 to 25 metres. A diver who dove it in 2014 described a group of triggerfish, locally nicknamed porcos, that kept approaching and retreating through the dive, together with an exceptionally large conger eel and pollock-type fish among the rocks. The site is also described as a spot where pelagic fish pass through in the open water above the reef.
What makes it special
Baixa do Ouro's defining feature is how shallow its reef top sits: three metres down, within reach of a diver on an early certified dive, before the ground opens into deeper volcanic rock. That start depth is shallower than any other south-coast site in the area: Arcos da Caloura's shelf begins at 5 metres, Baixa do Frade's reef top at 7, and the Dori wreck at 9. Operators based in both of the area's marina towns, Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo, name the site independently.
Know before you go
Reaching the reef's full depth, 22 to 25 metres, calls for Advanced Open Water; the shallow top at three metres suits any certified diver, and the one operator that markets the site calls it suitable for all levels. Expect the sea to run choppy on many days, per that same 2014 account: check the forecast with your operator before committing. Access is boat only.

Conditions & difficulty
The area's general window; no site-specific figure was found.
The reef top at 3m suits an Open Water diver, and the one operator that markets the site calls it suitable for all levels. The fuller route to its recorded 22-25m maximum crosses the Open Water depth ceiling, so certification_full is Advanced Open Water.
Summary
Marketed as suitable for all levels by the one operator that describes the site; not independently confirmed by a second source or a diver account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 'Baixio do Ouro' listed on a fishing app the same place as this dive site?▾
Not confirmed either way. A fishing app lists a spot called Baixio do Ouro (note the -io ending), within the same stretch of south coast this site and its neighbours occupy. The spelling differs, and the app serves anglers, not divers, so nothing ties that listing to this dive site with certainty; treat the two as separate until a diving source says otherwise.
Why does one 2014 diver's account call this the least memorable of the sites dived that week?▾
The same trip report that describes the site's curious triggerfish and its outsized conger eel also ranks Baixa do Ouro the weakest of four dives that day, without explaining why. No other detailed first-hand account of the site describes it, so read the encounters as real and the ranking as one diver's preference on one day, not a verdict on the dive.
