About
Azoresdiving holds a dual SSI and PADI affiliation, with at least one instructor carrying both agencies' instructor card, and runs its course ladder along the SSI line from Open Water Diver through Advanced, Dive Guide and Divemaster. It works out of a kiosk at the Marina Pero de Teive, on Ponta Delgada's waterfront: one of two Sao Miguel centres based in the island's capital, with the area's other two working from Vila Franca do Campo on the south coast.
Two products anchor the day-to-day operation. The Daily Double Dive puts certified divers on two guided boat dives, either morning or afternoon, with a refreshment break between them, typically out to the Dori wreck (12-20 m) or the volcanic arches at Arcos da Caloura and beyond. First-timers instead take the Basic Diver route: a pool session followed by a real boat dive from the harbour, with SSI certification folded into the price. Beyond the signature dives, the centre also runs trips to sites it names on its own listings, including sub-sites at the Ilheu de Vila Franca islet at 12-20 metres.
The centre's other identity is the offshore expedition: a full-day run to the Formigas islets and the Dollabarat seamount, a proposed marine reserve some 42 nautical miles out, with one diver's account of the crossing putting the open-water transit at about two and a half hours each way. Because the trip depends entirely on conditions, departures are confirmed individually, not run to a fixed schedule, with a free reschedule or refund built in when the weather does not cooperate. A Mares-branded rental fleet, serviced in-house, and an SMB and spool for sale round out the equipment side.
What divers say
Named instructors carry these reviews: Célia, Paulo and Lucas turn up again and again for patience with nervous or first-time divers, ahead of any one dive site. The Dori wreck comes up repeatedly as a highlight, and reviewers describe boat sightings of manta rays, a dolphin and, on one trip, a sperm whale during the offshore expedition. A separate forum account of four dives with the centre singled out well-maintained gear and attentive underwater guiding, again naming the Dori wreck as the best dive of the trip.
The one constructive note in this pass came from a single reviewer, who found the Daily Double Dive pricey at EUR 99 and felt the offshore expedition ran less often than an advanced diver might want, suggesting operators based in Vila Franca do Campo for a heavier offshore schedule. That view stands on one account and has not recurred elsewhere in the material gathered for this page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a certified diver to dive with Azoresdiving?▾
No. The Basic Diver product is built for first-timers: a pool session followed by a real harbour boat dive, with SSI certification included. Certified divers instead book the Daily Double Dive, two guided boat dives with a surface-interval break, and no further certification is required beyond the diver's existing card.
Why does the Open Water Diver course show two different prices?▾
The centre lists the course twice on its own homepage: a standalone course fee of EUR 460, and an all-in package advertised from EUR 450, side by side without an explanation of the difference. Anyone comparing the two should ask directly what each covers before booking.
What does the offshore trip to Formigas and Dollabarat involve?▾
It is a full-day, two-dive expedition roughly 42 nautical miles out to a proposed marine reserve around the Formigas islets and the Dollabarat seamount. One first-hand account of the crossing puts the open-water transit at about two and a half hours each way. Departures are confirmed individually once conditions allow, and the centre offers a free reschedule or refund when weather rules the trip out.
Is the Dori wreck an officially protected site?▾
The centre markets it as a protected artificial reef, but no official heritage or protected-area listing names the Dori wreck specifically; the description is the centre's own, not a government designation.
What marine life do divers report seeing on the offshore trips?▾
Reviewers have reported boat sightings of manta rays, dolphins and, on one trip, a sperm whale, alongside the reef life around the Dori wreck and the volcanic arches. These are opportunistic encounters on an open-ocean crossing, not a guaranteed part of the itinerary.
Can Azoresdiving accommodate divers with medical conditions or additional needs?▾
The centre says it has experience diving with guests who have depth restrictions, heart conditions or sensory differences, and asks that this be raised when booking so the team can plan around it.
