The dive
Arcos do Cruzeiro is a system of volcanic sea arches off Ponta Delgada, on Sao Miguel's north coast, reached only by boat and split into two separate routes: a shallow arch and a deeper passage, each dived as its own profile. The shallow route runs between 12 and 25 metres, easy enough water for underwater photography. The deeper route drops through a passage running 20 to 30 metres, past black coral fans and large groupers holding station in stronger current than the arch above.
What makes it special
The draw here is the split itself: two distinct dives built around one arch system, a shallow, photogenic profile paired with a deeper, current-swept passage that has its own signature encounter. A diver can work the whole system in one outing, an easy arch swim followed by a more demanding stretch further down.
Know before you go
The shallow route is marketed toward Open Water divers, but book on the depth you can actually work, not the label: confirm your logged experience matches the 25-metre range before committing to either route. Current builds noticeably once you leave the arch and enter the passage, so plan pace and gas for a swim against moving water, not a static reef. Water around Sao Miguel runs coolest through winter, 16 to 17 degrees, and warmest from June to October, up to 23 to 24 degrees, the better stretch for a visit. Azoresdiving and Best Spot Azores both run the site out of Ponta Delgada.
