The dive
Your gear goes on your back at a white-sand cove and stays there for fifteen to twenty minutes, up a staircase and along a wooden walkway threaded between limestone blades sharp enough that divers remember them afterwards. The lake opens out at the end of it, closed in on every side by cliffs. Then you get in and the rock keeps going. The blades and pinnacles of the island carry on under the surface, so the walls and the floor are a stone forest too1.
The first few metres of the descent are dark and nearly opaque, and then they clear as you sink. Below that the visibility is the best in Coron, fifteen to twenty metres routinely and thirty on a good day, which is the opposite of what the bay wrecks give you.
At about fourteen metres the dive changes twice at once. The fresh water on top gives way to sea water, and the temperature climbs from around 28 °C to roughly 38 °C2. You can usually see the boundary as a shimmering line before you cross it, and once you are through it the water feels thick. Fresh water is lighter than sea water, so you get more buoyant on the way down. That is backwards from every other dive you have done, and it is the real skill the site asks for.
The warm layer runs to roughly twenty-six metres, and this is where the dive actually happens: between boulders, sunken tree stumps and fins of grey rock, in water that nothing much lives in. Below that it cools again3, the tannin thickens, and the floor arrives at about thirty-five metres2. It is not sand. It is a fine brown ooze that takes a fin kick and holds it, and in a lake with no current nothing you disturb settles quickly. A cave mouth sits between thirty and thirty-three metres, running about thirty metres back and wide enough for one diver, with water moving through it between the lake and the sea. That is a technical dive and no part of the normal one.
What makes it special
A lake sitting a little above the sea, on an island made of dissolved rock, with a way through to the sea at the bottom of it. Coron Island is limestone4, weathered by tropical rain into blades and hollows until the whole island reads as a stone forest, and this lake is a flooded piece of it. Not a volcanic crater. That claim follows the site everywhere and there is nothing under it.
What is genuinely odd here is not the heat, it is that the lake is still a lake. It connects to the sea through dissolved conduits, and it sits slightly higher than the sea and drains outward, which is what keeps the fresh water on top and keeps the tide out of it1. That single arrangement explains the whole dive. It explains the two layers, the line you can see between them, and the barracuda that shows up now and then, which comes in through the same connection and leaves again.
Divers reach for the same comparison without knowing any of the geology, and the comparison is the moon. Grey rock, brown floor, almost nothing alive, and a temperature doing what temperature is not supposed to do. It splits opinion cleanly. Some divers call it the strangest dive they have done and some find it dull, and both reactions are common. The ones who tend to name it as the thing not to skip are the wreck divers, four days into a week of steel, who wanted one dive that was about something else.
Know before you go
Wear less, not more. A swimsuit or a 3 mm shorty is right here, and a full suit is a liability in the warm layer. Every other site in Coron pushes you the other way, towards 3 mm and 5 mm for repetitive deep days. This is the one place where that advice reverses.
Weight yourself for fresh water and expect that to stop being true halfway down. You enter fresh and finish the descent in sea water, so the correction lands halfway down the water column and not on the bottom.
The walk in is what people underestimate. Fifteen to twenty minutes with a cylinder on your back, up a staircase and along a walkway in tropical heat, and then straight into water at body temperature for the rest of the hour. Drink before you carry.
Go early or go late. The lake is a fixture on the island-hopping route and the entry area fills up, with swimmers in life jackets in a roped section at the surface. One diver describes arriving at midday to one other group and leaving with about fifty people in the water.
The island, its lakes and the water around it are Calamian Tagbanwa ancestral domain, and the lake is visited on the community's terms. A charge is collected at the water, separately from the municipal tourist fee. What people report paying differs widely, and one account records paying nothing, so ask your operator what your trip already covers.
Then the part that is easy to leave too late. No working recompression chamber is confirmed anywhere in Coron. The nearest one reported working is at Puerto Princesa, which shares the province and is still awkward, because no airline flies Busuanga to Puerto Princesa direct and the scheduled route runs through Manila. The access that makes this dive charming is the same access that makes an evacuation slow: a casualty has to come out of the water, back along the wooden walkway, down the staircase and onto a boat for the run to town. Hold insurance that pays for hyperbaric treatment and for the flight, and check the boat carries oxygen.

Flat, clear, currentless water, and the normal profile between 14 and 26 m looks undemanding written down. What lifts it above easy is the combination: roughly 38 °C at the deepest and busiest part of the dive, a density change at the halocline that makes you more buoyant as you descend, a fine silt floor that will not settle again in a lake with no current, and a 15 to 20 minute carry over limestone before you get in. Snorkelling the lake is easy, and the dive is a different activity.

Frequently Asked Questions
How hot does Barracuda Lake actually get, and is it safe?▾
Around 38 degrees in the layer between roughly 14 and 26 metres, which is hotter than a bath and about as hot as a hot tub. Divers have logged 39. Below about 26 metres it cools off again, and above 14 metres it sits near 28. Nobody has published an instrumented profile of this lake, so every figure in circulation comes from divers and dive computers. Treat them as readings. Safe is the wrong frame for it. The heat is not dangerous in itself, but it is a genuine physiological load arriving at the deepest part of your profile, straight after a walk in tropical heat with a cylinder on your back. That is why the local advice is to wear less exposure protection here, not more, and why hydration matters before you set off.
Is Barracuda Lake in an extinct volcano?▾
No, and it is the most repeated wrong fact about the site. Coron Island is limestone. Tropical rain has dissolved it into blades, pinnacles and hollows until the whole island reads as a stone forest, and the lake is a flooded piece of that landform with a connection through to the sea underneath it. There is no crater and no volcano. The story survives because hot water sounds volcanic, and the heat does have a plausible geothermal explanation: there is an attested hot spring a few kilometres away on Busuanga, and operators put the lake's warmth down to the same activity. Nobody has demonstrated a vent under the lake, so that explanation is still only an explanation.
How deep is Barracuda Lake?▾
About 35 metres to the floor, and you will find 30, 32 and 42 published elsewhere. The shallow figures fail on their own terms. Three separate descriptions put a cave entrance at 30 to 33 metres, and a cave entrance cannot sit below the bottom of the lake, so the lake goes deeper than 33. That rules the low numbers out. It does not by itself produce 35, which comes from two 2019 accounts giving the same figure independently of that argument. The 42 rests on a single page and is neither adopted here nor discarded. No averaging has been done, because 30, 35 and 42 are three claims and not a spread. In practice most of the dive happens between 14 and 26 metres, and the floor is a place you drop to and leave.
Are there really barracuda in Barracuda Lake?▾
Not living there. A barracuda occasionally comes into the lower layer through the underground connection to the sea and then goes back out again, which is a very different thing from a resident population. Operators will tell you about the one that sometimes sits in a crevice along the far wall, and it is worth hearing as what it is. The name itself is a tourist label. Locally the lake is called Luluyuan. The usual story is that the name came from a large barracuda skeleton found in the water, and one of the two accounts that tell it calls it a legend, so treat it as a story.
Is Barracuda Lake fresh water or salt water?▾
Both, stacked. The upper layer is fresh, near enough saltless, and the lower layer is close to seawater in salinity, which makes the lake brackish overall. The freshwater-lake label you will see is wrong about the lower half. The order matters and it gets published backwards: fresh on top, sea water below. The main change sits at about 14 metres, in the same place as the temperature jump, and you can often see it as a shimmering line before you cross it. Some accounts describe a salinity change much shallower, around 4 metres, separate from the 14 metre boundary. That one is unresolved. What is not in doubt is the direction, and it is why you get more buoyant on the way down.
What is the hardest part of diving Barracuda Lake?▾
Two things, and neither is depth. The first is the walk. Fifteen to twenty minutes with a cylinder on your back, up a staircase and along a wooden walkway threaded through limestone sharp enough that people remember it, in tropical heat, and then you get into water at body temperature. The second is buoyancy at the boundary. Every other dive teaches you that you get heavier as you go down. Here the fresh water on top is lighter than the sea water below it, so crossing the halocline pushes you the other way, in mid water, at the same moment the temperature jumps and the light changes. Divers who come out of it grinning are usually the ones who crossed it slowly the first time.
Can you visit Barracuda Lake without diving?▾
Yes, and most people do. The lake is a fixture on the standard Coron island-hopping route, alongside the neighbouring karst lake, and non-divers swim in a roped-off section near the entry with life jackets on. The rest of the water is for divers. Freediving outside the roped area is allowed only with a certified instructor. The practical point for anyone diving is the timing: one account describes arriving at midday to find a single other group and leaving with around fifty people in the water. Early or late is the difference between a lunar landscape and a queue.
