Pedra da Gaivota

Also known as: Seagull Rock

A shallow shore reef off Praia da Luz in the western Algarve, entered via a rock ramp, with large fan corals and seahorses among its residents.

The dive

Divers walk down a rock ramp near the edge of Praia da Luz and are on the reef immediately, with no surface swim to speak of. The terrain runs from about 5 to 12 metres, over rock formations thick with large fan corals covering most of the ground, in enough colour variation that one operator describes the reef as showing everything the Atlantic here has to offer. Water is mostly clear. No wall, cave or swim-through interrupts the profile; the whole dive stays on this one shallow rock-and-coral shelf.

What makes it special

Large fan corals dress most of this reef in colour, and octopus and a scatter of fish move through the gaps between them, with seahorses part of the same mix. Two operators run trips to this exact reef: Blue Ocean Divers, based close by in the Lagos and Luz area, and Divers Cove, travelling in from Carvoeiro further east. The site should not be confused with Blue Ocean Divers' separately named "Seahorse reef," a different, shallower shore dive run from the same base further along this coast.

Know before you go

This reef's GPS point is a catalog placement, approximately located rather than independently surveyed. Both confirmed operators price the dive within their standard guided-dive or course rates, not as a separate line item.

Easy

No confirmed operator publishes a stated minimum certification for this site; the shallow profile and rock-ramp shore entry suggest an easy, beginner-suited dive, but no source states that as a requirement.

The catalog record calls the dive easy and an independent check corroborates a beginner-suited framing; neither confirmed operator publishes its own difficulty grade for this specific reef.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some catalog listings give Pedra da Gaivota's depth as only 8 metres, when the operators who dive it go to 12?▾

The 8-metre figure comes from an older catalog import, not from either operator that actually runs trips to the reef. Two independent operators' own pages and an independent editorial listing all converge on 5 to 12 metres, so that better-corroborated range is what this page uses; the catalog figure is the outlier, not an average to split.

Are the seahorse sightings at Pedra da Gaivota confirmed by more than one source?▾

No. Only one operator reports that seahorses turn up here more often than at its other shore dives, and no second operator's page or community sighting report backs up that comparison. Treat it as that operator's own observation, not an independently confirmed feature of the reef.
