Diver's Cove

Diver's Cove has run out of Praia do Carvoeiro, in the Lagoa municipality, since 1992, the first and oldest PADI dive centre in southern Portugal. It holds both PADI and SSI affiliation, with SSI rating it an Instructor Training Center, and its own price list quotes separate PADI and SSI Open Water courses rather than treating the two as interchangeable. Janina Mahler, a physical education and art teacher who had already worked in Brazil and Colombia, took over the centre's management at the start of 2012; Jahani A. Nieto, a Master Scuba Diver Trainer with instructor ratings across Deep, Wreck, Night and other specialties, and Wolfram Leipert, a Divemaster, round out the team named on its own site.

The centre runs both boat and shore dives daily. Boat trips head to reefs off Lagos and Sagres and, for experienced divers only, to the corvette wrecks Oliveira do Carmo and Zambeze off Alvor at around 30 metres; a longer day trip reaches Carrapateira on the west coast. Shore dives rotate through a set of local beaches (Praia do Pintadinho, Praia do Caneiros, Praia da Albandeira, Pedra da Gaivota and Algar Seco), meeting at the centre at 9 AM on weekdays and 10 AM on Sundays.

Courses run the recreational ladder from Bubblemaker and Discover Scuba Diving through Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue, plus specialties including Wreck, Deep, Night, Nitrox and underwater photography. Instruction is available in German, English, Portuguese and Spanish, and the centre markets itself squarely at family diving, including children from age 8.

One detailed account stands out from the rest: a diver with a mobility disability, using a walker and managing lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, trained successfully through Open Water and Advanced courses, and the centre separately taught her blind partner to dive alongside the group. Janina and Jahani are named by reviewers years apart for patient, safety-conscious teaching. Flexibility around changing weather and sea conditions comes up independently more than once, and one reviewer who found the centre tricky to locate still recommended it.
