Rondao do Alvo
Also known as: Rondao Alvo, Rondão Alvo, Rondao do Alvor, Rondão do Alvor
A boat-access round reef off Lagos, Algarve: an 18 m overhead passage exits back over the reef top, with conger eels and morays in every crevice.

The dive
Rondao do Alvo is a round, elevated reef rising off Lagos, built from pronounced rock formations that stand several metres off the seabed. Interconnected canyons and crevices cut through it, opening onto the signature feature: an overhead cave at 18 metres that takes divers in low and surfaces them back out over the top of the reef, with no side window involved. Conger eels and morays shelter through the cut and the darker crevices beyond it. Currents here are generally light, and the canyons reward slow, methodical work instead of a fast swim past them.
What makes it special
Rondao do Alvo's overhead passage is one-way: divers enter low at 18 metres and exit high, surfacing above the reef itself and never doubling back through the same opening. Conger eels and morays are a shared draw on this stretch of the Lagos coast, but the passage is the specific, checkable detail that distinguishes this dive from a generic rocky reef.
Know before you go
The cave calls for steady buoyancy and comfort with overhead diving: hold level trim and work the passage slowly rather than rushing it. A torch is worth carrying too, for the darker stretch of the cut and the crevices where the eels shelter.
Depth figures vary a little by source: most converge on 14 to 22 metres, with one catalogue reporting a somewhat shallower 10 to 20 metres for the same reef. Plan your gas and profile around the deeper figure.

Conditions & difficulty
No operator or catalogue states a minimum certification, but the depth range and the genuine overhead passage at 18 m make Advanced Open Water, or equivalent, a sensible practical minimum
Summary
Rated intermediate by catalogue sources; the overhead cave section adds real demands beyond the depth alone
Safety considerations
What can go wrong here, and what divers do about it. Conditions change - take the briefing from the operator on the day.
- Overhead: The 18 m cave is a true overhead passage: there is no direct ascent until the exitHold level trim and steady buoyancy through the passage; do not attempt it without overhead-environment comfort and training
- Conditions: The darker sections of the cut, and the crevices where the eels shelter, are hard to see without a lightCarry a primary torch

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rondao do Alvo the same site as 'Rondao do Alvor'?▾
Yes. One travel guide's own site lists 'Rondão do Alvor' under the same Lagos cluster as this reef's neighbours, at the identical depth figure this site carries: the two names point to one reef under an alternate spelling, not a separate site near the town of Alvor further east.
Is the 18 m cave at Rondao do Alvo a swim-through, or does it dead-end like an overhang?▾
A swim-through, not a dead end. The dive above covers how divers move through the passage; Know before you go covers what the overhead section calls for.
