About
A diver planning a trip with Azul Diving Center first has to pick a coast: a Funchal base at the Penha França Mar Hotel, a short walk from the town-centre hotel strip, or a second base at the Quinta do Lorde Marina in Caniçal, on the island's eastern side, built to reach Ponta de São Lourenço. Azul has operated from Funchal since 2014, as a PADI 5-Star Dive Centre teaching the full recreational ladder from Discover Scuba Diving, with no certification required, through Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver and the Wreck, Deep and Nitrox specialties.
The dive programme centres on three destinations: daily boat trips to the Garajau Marine Reserve for its volcanic reef formations and resident groupers, barracudas, stingrays and moray eels; the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira wreck at roughly 15 to 30 metres, for certified divers only; and Ponta de São Lourenço out of the Caniçal base, for volcanic coastal scenery, rays and occasional pelagic and monk seal sightings. Both bases also keep a shore-diveable house reef, off the Funchal jetty and off the Caniçal marina beach, for shore dives and try-dives. A Wednesday night dive and multi-dive packages of six, eight or ten dives extend the boat programme, alongside equipment servicing through a Mares partnership it advertises on-site, and rental gear down to single items, including a free mask and a GoPro 7 hire.
Beyond diving, Azul runs whale and dolphin watching trips on a shared boat or as a private charter. The Caniçal base carries its own separate public listing, distinct from the Funchal one.
What divers say
Divers who write up trips with Azul call the outfit well organised and professional, and several describe repeat custom over several days, beyond a single outing. A recurring theme on the wreck dive is how much of the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira a diver gets to see: accounts describe working the hull from stern to bow on a single dive, for divers holding the right certification for it. New arrivals should expect a short assessment dive before being taken further, a step more than one account mentions.
At this volume of reviews, the split-attention risk that comes with a busy operation shows up at least once: a diver taking a course reported the instructor dividing attention between the class and several other guided divers on the same outing, and came away feeling they got less out of it than planned. Set against an otherwise strongly positive pattern, it reads as a caution about how a busy day can go, not a typical outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Funchal and Caniçal locations run by the same company?▾
Yes. The Funchal base and the Quinta do Lorde Marina base at Caniçal share the same phone number and website domain; each carries its own separate set of public reviews, so the two are branches of one operator, not two unrelated listings.
Will I need to do a check dive before booking a trip with Azul?▾
Some divers report being taken on an assessment dive before being included on further trips. Budget time for it on a first outing; do not assume you can go straight onto the wreck or the reserve.
What does Azul's PADI 5-Star status mean for the courses on offer?▾
A PADI 5-Star Dive Centre runs the full range of PADI training in-house. At Azul that spans Discover Scuba Diving, with no certification needed, through Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver and specialties including Wreck, Deep and Nitrox.
Can I dive the Funchal wreck and Ponta de São Lourenço on the same day?▾
Not easily. The Garajau reserve and the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira wreck run from the Funchal base; Ponta de São Lourenço is reached from the separate Caniçal base, a drive east along the island. Plan which side of Madeira you want to dive on a given day.
Is there a shore-diveable house reef at either base?▾
Yes, at both: a jetty entry at Funchal and a marina-beach entry at Caniçal, used for shore dives and for Discover Scuba sessions.
Does Azul run trips that aren't diving?▾
Yes, whale and dolphin watching, on a shared boat or as a private charter, alongside the dive programme.
