About

A cave beside the beach at Praia do Garajau holds Mero Diving Center's shop, in the coastal Caniço reserve cluster on Madeira's south coast, a short distance south of Caniço de Baixo where several sibling operators are based. A diver who wrote up the visit called it an old whaling cave beside the beach of a protected marine area, and the centre's own address names it the same way: Gruta da Praia do Garajau. Founder and lead instructor Carlos Marques leads a team that also includes instructors Ruben Pereira, João Câmara, Francisca Fernandes and Luis Gonçalves.

The centre's signature draw is its resident wildlife: it names six groupers individually on its own site, Toni, Rambo, Pintas, Elvis, Inglês and Buda. Three core products structure the offering: a Diving Experience try-dive for first-timers, Guided Diving for certified divers on the reserve house site, and a full course ladder from Open Water through Divemaster-equivalent with specialties. Divers who want more than the reserve dive can add a boat trip to either of two wrecks, the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira or the Bowbelle, each sold as a minimum four-dive package. Equipment is available to rent piece by piece, down to individual tank sizes, and access down to the cave is by the local cable car, free for divers.

What divers say

Reviews return to the same handful of themes. Staff are named and thanked individually rather than praised as a group: different reviewers single out Ruben, Luis and Carlos across accounts written years apart, and one describes watching Elvis, the grouper, interact directly with a guide. Several mention close, personal attention, with one recalling a one-to-one ratio between diver and guide. The cave and beach setting itself draws comment as much as the diving does, and photos and video included with the try-dive come up repeatedly as a nice touch. One reviewer found the water cold on the day, though noted a warm shower on site put that right afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I dive with the Garajau groupers at Mero Diving Center?▾

The house dive from the cave at Praia do Garajau is the one that reaches them: the centre names six resident groupers individually, Toni, Rambo, Pintas, Elvis, Inglês and Buda, and reviewers describe close encounters with them, including one who watched a grouper interact directly with a guide.

Is Mero Diving Center a good choice for a first try-dive?▾

The Diving Experience package is built for first-timers: around two hours including a safety and equipment briefing, run from the cave base at Praia do Garajau, with photos and video from the dive included in the price.

How do I get down to a dive centre built inside a cave?▾

Mero's shop sits in the Praia do Garajau cave below the clifftop, and one diver's account describes reaching it by the local cable car down to the beach, which runs free of charge for divers.

What do the wreck boat trips at Mero Diving Center involve?▾

Both the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira and the Bowbelle are sold as minimum four-dive boat packages rather than single add-on dives, with a 45 EUR supplement on the Corveta trip and a 35 EUR supplement on the Bowbelle trip, on top of the standard guided-dive price, plus a separate marine-reserve entry charge.

Does diving the Garajau reserve with Mero cost extra?▾

Yes: alongside the guided-dive price, the centre applies a small nature-reserve and corvette-wreck entry charge, the government marine-reserve fee also collected by other operators working this stretch of coast.
