About
Atalaia Diving Center runs from inside the Royal Orchid, Roca Mar and Cais da Oliveira hotels at Caniço de Baixo, on Madeira's south coast. Joe Klenk founded it in March 1988; his son Marco Klenk took over in 2016, and in 2022 ownership passed to the current operators, Pedro Fernandes and Ainhoa Zubeldia, who lead a newly renovated shop built around small-group diving. Fernandes logs over 5,000 dives and holds a CMAS three-star rating; Zubeldia, a biologist with around 4,000 logged dives, also instructs.
The centre's own house reef is the centrepiece here: six shore-accessible spots between 3 and 30 metres, from a shallow air-pocket cave to walls dropping past 20 metres. Boat trips reach further, to the Garajau marine reserve and to the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira, an 85-metre former corvette scuttled on 4 September 2018 that sits between 12 and 33 metres.
A 2.10-metre freshwater pool on site handles try-dives and training, and the dive boat is a 7.4-metre rigid inflatable that carries up to 16 divers. Courses run the SSI and PADI ladders from Discover Scuba Diving through Divemaster and Dive Guide, taught in English, German, Portuguese and Spanish, and rental gear (SCUBAPRO BCDs and regulators, 7mm Mares wetsuits) is replaced every two years.
What divers say
Reviews describe a well-organised, safety-focused operation, with a routine debriefing after every dive where the guide goes back over the route and the marine life spotted. Staff are named individually and repeatedly across accounts years apart: Pedro, Jason, Michelle, António and Ainhoa all recur, and divers who planned a day or two of diving have stayed for a week or more once they started.
The one recurring caution, from a single account, is about the shore entry and exit at the house reef itself: in a heavy swell, getting in and out involved running for higher ground with gear still on, though the same diver still called the shop great and said they would return.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the shore entry and exit at Atalaia's house reef always calm?▾
Not always. One diver's 2023 account described heavy swell at the house-reef entry that meant running to higher ground with full gear on to avoid the waves, and took some persuading before a second dive went ahead; that same account still praised the gear and the staff. It is the only detailed account of rough conditions on file, and it says more about Madeira's exposed coastline than about how the centre runs its dives.
What happens if I need a decompression chamber while diving with Atalaia?▾
The centre carries two oxygen units, one on site and one on the boat, with a full first-aid kit at both. The nearest recompression chamber is the 12-person HAUX unit at Funchal Hospital, about 10 km away, which runs a 24-hour emergency service.
Do I need a medical clearance to dive with Atalaia?▾
Yes, a Diving Fitness Examination is required before diving. The centre provides the medical form in five languages so it can be completed and signed ahead of the trip.
What does Atalaia's house reef actually cover?▾
Six shore-accessible spots between 3 and 30 metres: Canyon Reef, Easy Track, Eastern Rock's, Moray's Wall, Ponta da Oliveira and The Cave, an air-pocket cave around 50 metres long and 20 metres wide. Atalaia calls it the biggest house reef in Madeira.
When is Atalaia open?▾
Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 17:00. It is closed on Sundays and on 25 December and 1 January.
Where does the name Atalaia come from?▾
The centre takes its name from a rock formation on the coastline about a kilometre away that, in its own account, resembles a male face; 'Atalaia' means 'the guard' in Portuguese.
