About
Dive Around Madeira has no shopfront. It bases out of a room inside the Museu da Baleia da Madeira, the Whale Museum, in Caniçal on Madeira's eastern tip, and its gear and instruction travel to the diver at each site. One instructor, Joao, is named throughout the centre's own client-facing material and across nearly every review that names an instructor; there is no separate team page. The centre is SSI-affiliated, without a Diamond Center or Instructor Training Center rating.
Courses run the SSI ladder: an Open Water Diver certification over three to four days for EUR 400, and a Try Scuba Diving session with no certification required, capped at three hours, for EUR 80. Certified divers book a single or double guided Fun Dive with equipment included, at EUR 55 and EUR 90; the centre notes that dives to natural parks, by boat, or to special dive sites can carry an extra fee on top of those rates.
Diving covers five named sites along Madeira's coast. Reis Magos, a shore entry running 4 to 15 metres with no more than a soft current, suits everyone from beginners to advanced divers. Corveta Afonso Cerqueira, the scuttled wreck inside the Garajau natural reserve, and Ponta do Garajau itself are both reached by boat or shore, while Pedra D'eira and a site the centre calls Blue Hole round out the shore-entry coverage.
What divers say
Reviews converge on the same instructor: Joao, named personally in nearly every account that mentions a guide, teaching in small groups or one-to-one and giving a safety briefing before each dive. Underwater photos taken during the dive are shared with divers afterwards, and homemade snacks and tea between dives, on the boat or in the van, come up again and again. No negative pattern recurs on either platform. The pattern matches the centre's own framing of its purpose, building confidence and leaving fears behind, but here it shows up as a repeated structure, not a marketing claim: briefing, dive, photos, snacks, the same instructor throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dive Around Madeira an SSI Instructor Training Center?▾
No. Its SSI directory listing confirms the affiliation but records no Diamond Center or Instructor Training Center rating, so it runs on the standard SSI course ladder and does not train other instructors in house.
Does Joao teach every dive personally?▾
Every review that names an instructor names Joao, and the centre's own site introduces nobody else. Two reviews do mention a second guide, spelled two different ways between them, 'Joeo and Claudio' in one, 'Zoz' in another, so a second guide may occasionally join a dive, though this is not confirmed anywhere on the centre's own site.
Is Pedra D'eira suitable for a newly certified diver?▾
The centre's own listing puts Pedra D'eira at 4 to 25 metres and rates it for 'beginners and advanced' without saying which part of that range beginners are kept to. Most open water certifications qualify divers to around 18 to 20 metres, so a newly certified diver booking this site should confirm with the centre in advance that the planned dive stays inside their own certification limit.
How deep does the Blue Hole dive actually run?▾
Dive Around Madeira's own site lists Blue Hole at 12 to 25 metres with a soft to strong current, for experienced divers and above. A site with the same name is also recorded shallower elsewhere, at 7 to 21 metres, and it is not settled whether the two names describe the same stretch of coast. Ask whichever operator you book with which figure applies to your dive.
Is there a dive operator based right at the Whale Museum in Caniçal?▾
Yes. Dive Around Madeira uses a room inside the Museu da Baleia da Madeira as its office, classroom and equipment store, and runs its courses and guided dives out from there. It has no separate shopfront.
Does the published dive price include equipment, and are there any extra costs?▾
Equipment is included in the EUR 55 single-dive and EUR 90 double-dive rates. The centre notes that dives to natural parks, by boat, or to special dive sites can carry an extra fee on top of those published rates.
